Demos, demos, demos!
I don’t count the Up Running Mixes as demos, songs were close to done at that point, except for I’m In Love, which is more or less the first demo for Animal.
I’m sure they have plenty of actual demos that predate those mixes, like the previous ones we got for Daysleeper, Hope, etc.

Agreed, more demos! I didn’t realize I’m in Love is the same as Animal.
A few Up demos here: R.E.M. - Up Demos : R.E.M. : Free Download, Borrow, and Streaming : Internet Archive
Hadn’t heard that version of Why Not Smile before.
“Agreed, more demos! I didn’t realize I’m in Love is the same as Animal.”
It’s not exactly the same, but Animal borrows elements from it (and another similar Reveal demo I forgot the name of). You can pretty much sing parts of Animal on top of both though.

I love everything about Up and personally wouldn’t change a thing

Considering 1/2 of the album SOUNDS like “demos” anyway… No idea…
Maybe some “finished” tracks?
I’m kidding. There’s 6 good tracks on there.
Reveal is the REAL turd…
I would say that Reveal is the album where the three-piece version of the band was most on the same page and working as a team, with correspondingly good results.

I love Reveal, it’s summery. They could even have recorded another really cool record with all the unused instrumental tracks left from those sessions.

On the 40th anniversary reissue perhaps?
I’d like a coloured vinyl version as well - something matching the cover. That would be cool. And hope they’ll put out enough copies so that we don’t end up with the NAIHF fiasco 2.0 (my pre order of the marble coloured vinyl was cancelled, and had to get mine from eBay at such a rip off price.
I think Up would lend itself really well to a great ATMOS mix. I feel like it’s probably unlikely though, given that only Automatic received that treatment so far (as far as I’m aware).
Anyone heard any indication of when we might see the anniversary reissue of Up?

Good thread here: R.E.M UP 25th Anniversary | Steve Hoffman Music Forums
Someone mentioned that Berry had brought a demo called “Bill’s Funky” to the initial Up sessions. Would be interesting to hear any pre-Bill departure material. I suspect that won’t happen due to the change in publishing companies with his departure.

I’m late to the party, but what I’d like to see are demos (I’m well aware of the 6 in existence) but I feel a remix would be even better, and much more justified than the Monster remix (which I never listen to). I’d also like a “stripped down” record robbed of most of the electronica stuff.

I’d much prefer demos, outtakes, and alternate mixes to a contemporary remix. Up was supposed to be experimental, so I don’t think there’s much need to change it 25 years after the fact.
Oh–for SURE I want demos and outtakes above all others, but I just don’t think there is enough of that. And I’m not as in love with the remix idea as you might think, but I just feel it could work well with UP, but, again, with an emphasis on less electronica. Then again, how do you do Hope without it? Is there an acoustic demo? That’d be cool. I guess we already have the acoustic Why Not Smile. I don’t know. I’m not holding my breath nor expecting much. I mean, I’ve made that point of view clear based on my other post, lol.

I suspect there are a lot of demos and outtakes, considering they were so prolific at that time. I doubt there are many fully fleshed-out songs, but there are likely dozens of instrumental demos.

Ah the “instrumental” demos. lol. Don’t get me started on that. I’ve always been a bit irked by Stipe’s inability to work on more music. We got so few quality B-sides around this time, would it have killed the guy to slap a vocal on something and release it as an Xmas single. “Magnetic North” was the only notable outtake from this era IMO…and I actually really like that song. I recall the early IRS days when the quality B-sides flowed like fine wine…
I’m looking at the REM timeline, and a certain song keeps coming up: Elephant Man (Frydman Strings) (Miracle). I hope this is a quality unreleased song and not merely an alt name for an Up track…
It became a very nice instrumental from the Man on the Moon soundtrack, called Miracle.
There is some stuff kicking around from the Up sessions called Up Running Mixes or something like that. It’s mostly alternative mixes of the album tracks. The only unreleased song with vocals is called I’m in Love. I quite like it. But then I love the synthy electronic sound of Up, and it’s very much in that bracket. If I could post it here I would, but the computer I have it on is knackered.
