Agree 100%.
These are the B sides from the CD singles.
They also released The Great Beyond in 1999 with 3 live tracks from Glastonbury as B sides.
Not sure what to expect. Probably they can add any outtakes from the MOTM soundtrack since The great beyond was performed live for the first time on the 1st concert of the european leg of the Up Tour, in Lisboa.
Don’t expect the full album to be remixed like Monster was. The one I think would deserve a remix is ATS.
Let’s wait and see.
Reveal could benefit from a de-mix, in my opinion. I.e., get rid of all the superfluous glockenspiels and electric sitars and just focus on the core instruments of guitar, bass, and drums. At one point, I think they toyed with the idea of releasing Reveal in three different versions: the mix we have, an acoustic/unplugged mix, and then a more electronic version on the lines of what became the R.E.M.i.x. promotional album.
I belive both Reveal and Around The Sun were over produced and a rough version of both would be great. Still thing Around The Sun suffered more with all the excess of production.
That’s only my opinion.
I think Bill has said his favorite song by R.E.M. after he left was “Humming (All the Way to Reno)”, I think I read it a while ago. However, he may have updated it?
edit: All the Way to Reno (You’re gonna be a star). Sorry. I sometimes forget the ACTUAL name to songs.
Up is my favourite album of all time. It’s not perfect but it has a fractured beauty, a result of the turmoil the band was going through. For whatever was happening in my life at that time, it was the perfect fit. It’s still my go-to when things are rough.
Not sure what to expect/want from the re-issue. I have most of the demos, though some are pretty low quality. A finished version of “I’m in Love” would be nice, though I suspect none exists.
Would love good liner notes though. The Hi-Fi ones made up a little for the lack of unreleased material.
Peter is not exactly a reliable narrator, but, in multiple interviews, he has claimed that “some of my best songs/demos didn’t make the cut for Up,” because Stipe didn’t write lyrics for them. He and Scott McCaughey have specifically mentioned an unreleased or unfinished song idea called “Drum Sample,” which is supposedly amazing, mega, wow, etc., but I’ll believe it when I hear it. If it’s really any different from stuff like “Hope” that did make the album, I’ll be surprised. The Up bonus material I’d most like to hear is the mythical spring 1997 acoustic demo session from Peter’s house in Hawaii, when Bill was still in the band, and, allegedly, brought a demo titled “Bill’s Funky” to the party. I’d also like to hear the summer? 1997 session, where, in addition to cutting the “Live for Today” fan club single, they also cut several other future Up songs, again, while Bill was still technically in the band. “Live for Today” may be my favorite song from the whole project, as it reflects what the album likely would have sounded like if Peter’s “first take, best take” aesthetic had won the day, which, of course, it did not.
Oh, I missed that!
sotto voce I bet he says that about ALLLLL the songs
It’s a truly wonderful album, isn’t it…
I know little about what was cut from Up, but everything mentioned piques my interest—especially the demos with Bill. What I can say that I’d like to see is changes to the design and packaging of the album. Whereas the 1999 tour backdrop had some great visuals that evoked the feel of songs as diverse as “Hope” and “Daysleeper,” the album’s cover is…underwhelming. The Out of Time and Automatic reissues improved on the covers, and I’m hoping for the same with Up.
Nigil Godrich is half of Thoms solo work. I talked to Thom for half a second in 2019 (come to think about it that may have been the last concert I went to, before this dumpster fire) it was rather embarrassing, my intention was to ask about how he thought of some song, but all I could think of was…
“We share the same middle name, Edward.”
He replied,“It’s a very posh name where I’m from.”
Further to my previous pipe dream post about Bill doing a Monster Litt-esque bonus remix version, Thom Yorke would be another great person to give it to to reimagine. He’s cited many times how Up was an influence on Kid A.
Did not know that Thom loved Up, that’s amazing. A Yorke remix of any of those tracks is just an excellent idea. Falls to Climb (Yorke Remix) would be my pick!
Yeah, he’s said before that seeing REM evolve into something new and experimental with Up gave Radiohead the confidence to try something new with Kid A. New Adventures is apparently Thom’s favourite album though.
Honestly, the thought of getting each track remixed by different people would be pretty cool. I’ll have to suggest it.
If Paul McCarney can do it…
Yep, it is on the REMTV box set – I just watched it last week!
Maybe selections of the Tibetan Freedom Concert?
Especially, Michael with Radiohead doing Lucky. I would lose my shit if they finally released the full version of Thom singing Be Mine! I’ve only heard a real short version of it. I’m not even sure a full version exists?
