48 years ago today Lynyrd Skynyrd’s plane went down in a Mississippi swamp but I didn’t learn of it until the following day. I was 15 at the time. My Dad knew of the crash and was aware there had been fatalities but wasn’t exactly sure who the band was. When I arrived at school that morning I found out immediately.
This live performance of “Freebird” just a few months before the crash remains a powerful moment for me. Not just the performance of the song but the audience getting swept up by the unmistakable magic of it. Though I never had the pleasure of seeing this version of the band, it is Skynyrd as I remember them from my youth. Captured here in full flight during one of Bill Graham’s Day On the Green concerts in Oakland, CA. A band with renewed vigor at the top of their game on the cusp of super stardom, poised to conquer the world. Soon, suddenly to come to such a sad and tragic end.

Yes! Me too! I heard it on the radio and loved it instantly. I had no idea until fairly recently that it was a gift to her from Bruce Springsteen…

Here’s the original :“One of Us” . Of course Prince had “slave” in the lyrics not “slob” but either way it’s a fantastic song. I wish I’d seen him/met him just like so many others- Bowie, Queen, George Michael, Ed Sheeran, George Ezra, Bruce Springsteen- and the list goes on… just thank my lucky stars I managed to see R.E.M. 3 times…

Could do with some subtitles…? Maybe? Or maybe I’m just deaf- could be…

One of my absolute favorite Nada Surf songs. I just now happened upon this particular performance of it.
