You seem so sad...why not smile

Later in the evening as you lie awake in bed
With the echoes from the amplifiers ringing in your head
You smoke the day’s last cigarette, remembering what she said

(Bob Seger)

Every evening, when all my days work is through
I call my baby, and ask her what shall we do
I mention movies, but she don’t seem to dig that
And then she ask me, why don’t I come to her flat
And have some supper and let the evening pass by
By playing records, beside a groovy hi-fi
I say yeah yeah that’s what I say, I say yeah yeah

  • Jon Hendricks. I’m familiar with the Georgie Fame version which I love.

I told you I was trouble
You know that I’m no good
Sweet reunion, Jamaica and Spain
We’re like how we were again
I’m in the tub, you on the seat
Lick your lips as I soap my feet

Amy Winehouse

I am the entertainer
The idol of my age
I make all kinds of money
When I go on the stage
Ah, you’ve seen me in the papers
I’ve been in the magazines
But if I go cold, I won’t get sold
I’ll get put in the back in the discount rack
Like another can of beans

Billy Joel

All the world’s indeed a stage
And we are merely players
Performers and portrayers
Each another’s audience
Outside the gilded cage

(Rush)

Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble
And if I stay it will be double
So come on and let me know

He tried to tell the people, but the people wouldn’t hear
Him spinning yarns and telling tales from yesteryear

Then he smiled and finished his story
He said “Will you pass it on for me?”
(Storyteller) I’ll tell that tale for you
(Storyteller) Somehow I’ll get your message through

Ray Davies

This was one of the most stunning gigs I ever experienced. The Kinks were through. Ray Davies advertised he was doing a one man show called The Storyteller in a tiny venue. Of course I went. The man came onstage with a book and guitar, sat on a barstool and entertained everyone with a series of stories and songs about his life, career, fame and everything else. I’ll never forget it. The video channel VH1 bought the rights to the storyteller name and format. Ray is credited along with every artist along with whoever did one of those sets.

Love it can make your world
Bring you alive
But I wasn’t dead before
So baby, you ain’t hard to survive
Maybe I was not the one
But I had to try
And in the end there’s no such thing
As wasted time

Justin Currie

It’s summer in the city, we were hanging on the lawn
Talking all the time about where the time had gone
It’s not the way I thought it’d be, it’s not what I was told
I got a young heart and I don’t want to get old
I never want to get old

And you try and you try
And you try and you try
And you try and you try again
But you can’t try enough

(Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers)

Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck feelin’ dirty and gritty
Been down, isn’t it a pity
Doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city

Well, I met a girl in West Hollywood
But I ain’t naming names
But she really worked me over good
She was just like Jesse James

She really worked me over good
She was a credit to her gender
She put me through some changes, Lord
Sort of like a Waring blender

Poor, poor pitiful me
Poor, poor pitiful me
These young girls won’t let me be
Lord have mercy on me
Woe is me

(Warren Zevon)

Happy just to play our tunes
We felt good when we did it right
We felt good on a hot summer night, yeah

She was my woman
I loved her so
But it’s too late now
I’ve let her go
I’m going through changes
I’m going through changes

  • Black Sabbath

Still don’t know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild, a million dead-end streets and
Every time I thought I’d got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I’ve never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I’m much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes, turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes, don’t want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes, turn and face the strange
Ch-ch-changes, just gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can’t trace time

(David Bowie)

I’m the changingman, whoa, built on shifting sands
Yeah I’m the changingman, waiting for the bang
As I light a bitter fuse
Our time is on loan only ours to borrow
What I can’t be today I can be tomorrow

Paul Weller

You keep all your money in a big brown bag
inside a zoo, what a thing to do
Baby you’re a rich man
Baby you’re a rich man
Baby you’re a rich man, too

The Beatles

And time waits for no man, and it won’t wait for me
Yes, time waits for no one, and it won’t wait for thee
Drink in your summer, gather your corn
The dreams of the night time will vanish by dawn

  • The Rolling Stones

The things you lean on are the things that don’t last
Well it’s just now and then my line gets cast
into these Time passages
There’s something back there that you left behiind
Time passages
Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight

Al Stewart

When a blue horizon is sleeping in the station
With a ticket for a train
Surely mine will deliver me there

  • Rickie Lee Jones

All the angels that I know are fallen and broken
Soaking in the muddy river
All the angels that I love, they don’t hang out above
They come down to deliver
They deliver me

(Catie Curtis)

And the walls came tumbling down
And our worlds came crashing around
And the angels fall from the sky
Token angels in disguise
Take to the sky
