Hi Eric! We’ve missed you. Sorry if I’ve pissed you off in the past. I’ve mellowed a bit with [even more] age.
Hey there: Mottje t.H. is back. Missing murmurs.com a lot but never saw a hint that it’s back.
I’ve already seen some familiar names here.
I’ve joined some nice tribute-concerts lately and miss the original band so much.
Maybe I’m gonna see Drink the sea in October…
There was an announcement made on R.E.M. Fans United, a FB group run by Ethan and Leigh Hyland who was a member of the original Murmurs (not sure about this incarnation). I’m sure the word was passed around to other groups, individual accounts, etc. as well. A bunch of former members returned here but basically just to check in. Very few of them stayed.
With very few exceptions, it appears the days of message boards and email discussion groups have become a thing of the past. Social media platforms have taken over despite the fact that pretty much everyone complains about them. They stay because that’s where they receive the highest level of engagement.
I appears to me people are comfortable to post just about anything on other social media sites. “I ate a chocolate bar today, good it was”* replies, "Glad you enjoyed it!" “My favorite chocolate bar is KitKat”..with 10 or so likes. I’ve seen pictures of what drink one is having every time they go out, and food pics when out to dinner. “Cheers!” “That looks delicious!” “Just arrived in Bali” "Enjoy! Stay safe, have a great time "
Rarely does that happen here at murmurs if at all. Is it a good or bad thing? I don’t know.
I don’t think of Murmurs (or message boards in general) as a social media platform. At least not in the same sense as FB, IG, X, BlueSky, Tik Tok, etc. Same for the email discussion lists that predated the coining of the term “Social Media.”
This may sound weird, you know murmurs at times has the atmosphere of Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks minus the server behind the diner. .
I agree and maybe there’s something to be said for that as far as the frequent participants being a relatively small group of people.
As far as the kind of randomness you mentioned, the Free Floating Honesty section of the board has always been the place for that. Still, I don’t recall anyone posting a photo of their supper. I do recall the anything goes atmosphere which included racial slurs and homophobia.
It never occurred to me to take a photo of food until FB. One night when I was still relatively new to FB I posted a photo of a pork chop on a grill with no caption. It wasn’t even mine, it was just something I found on Google. When I checked about a half hour later there were all kinds of comments and Likes. People love photos of food on social media. Go figure.
