5th October
1992 - R.E.M. released their eighth studio album Automatic For The People in the U.K. and in the U.S. on the 6th. There are beautiful songs on this record, “Try Not To Breathe” is one of them I absolutely love.
From R.E.M.’s socials:
On this day in band history in 2005, Berry Buck Mills & Stipe played an impromptu set at the wedding reception of DeWitt Burton (R.E.M’s equipment manager/production) & Jackie Burton. The celebration took place at the Spare Room Lounge, Kingpins Bowl And Brew in Athens, and included the following set:
Sitting Still / (Don’t Go Back To) Rockville (Mike Mills on vocals) / Wolves, Lower / Begin The Begin / The One I Love / Permanent Vacation / Radio Free Europe (thanks to The R.E.M. Timeline for set info)
21 years ago tonight I was fortunate enough to see R.E.M. from the front row at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, NC thanks to the fan club. Bill Berry was spotted in the wings earlier on but didn’t find his way onto the stage until towards the end of the evening when he joined Mike Mills for backing vocals on “Radio Free Europe.”
After the song was over he walked towards the drum kit which Bill Rieflin gladly relinquished. At that moment Micheal Stipe leaped high in the air as the crowd reacted with a deafening roar. As they broke into “Permanent Vacation,” an original that was a staple during their club days, the roar reached a fever pitch.
The next day, David Menconi, then a music writer for the Raleigh News & Observer put out a call for photos on the local, alt.country-centric email list, Guitartown. I responded in kind but time was of the essence. I went to a One Hour photo at lunch and put the photos in the mail to him later that day.
It later ran in a short piece he wrote for Mojo magazine (the top photo is mine). R.E.M. were kind enough to treat us to several surprises when they performed in the area over the years, a sign that they’d never forgotten their NC roots. That night may well be my favorite of them.
Great show! So much energy & presence on stage. No wonder they became one of the world’s greatest bands.
