I saw Shannon and the Clams last month and they were amazing. I was only really familiar with the current album (which is one of my albums of the year). I’m now digging into their catalogue and currently obsessed with this song.
Fantastic live band, too. Touring Oz in the new year @Lori
I’ve recently discovered Kathleen Edwards, after hearing her (excellent) cover of Sweetness Follows.
I’m not sure how I missed her first time around, as she’s right up my street. Her debut album, Failer, is over 20 years old now. It’s fantastic, and surely a big influence on some of the brilliant singer-songwriters of recent years, like Waxahatchee and Hurray for the Riff Raff.
I was only familiar with Tracey Thorn from a song I love on a Style Council record. Never got to listen to her other work with Ben Watt, Everything But The Girl until just recently. 1996 and still sounds so fresh. Addicted to the beats, the chill & Tracey’s vocals, this song in particular.
That’s the single edit, btw, the full version has a couple minutes of mostly instrumental noodling.
I grew up listening to a lot of my parents’ 60s rock music collection, including Tommy James & the Shondells. And yeah at the same time in the late 80s I was also starting to hear several prominent covers – the Joan Jett “Crimson and Clover” that you mentioned was still around, plus Billy Idol doing “Mony Mony” and Tiffany doing “I Think We’re Alone Now” both hit in the late 80s IIRC.
