It’s a long thread already and I have no idea if this has shown up before, but here’s an incredibly powerful performance I love. The Future Islands playing “Seasons” on Letterman:
This incredibly powerful performance is new to me.
“Working Man” by Rush from the Time Machine tour in 2011.
This was filmed in Cleveland. Rush’s first bit of success outside of Ontario was when a Cleveland radio station started playing this song back in 1974.
On the album, it’s more dance hall. They just rocked it out here.
One of the rare songs I like where there are kinda two different versions.
Makes me wonder, if R.E.M. coulda done the same with King of Comedy.
Somewhere in some Blackhole, that version exists…
Happy Birthday to Erika Wennerstrom (Heartless Bastards, solo). Here’s one from her lone solo album, 2018’s Sweet Unknown.

I have 4 sisters (I’m the only boy). All of my sisters went to see the Crowdies in Glasgow last week. Would’ve loved to have joined them but personal circumstances prevented it. They were my 2nd favourite band for a long time. Don’t really have a 2nd favourite band anymore, just loads of bands that I love a little less than R.E.M.
I love the Finn brother’s harmonies on “Weather with You”. I never saw Crowded House live. I did see the Finn bros. play in their former band, Splitz Enz.
In the late 70’s, Australia was going through a recession. There was a lot of unemployment & dissatisfied youth. In September 1979, police were called to the Star Hotel in Newcastle due to uncontrolled overcrowding. The police entered the venue & tried to stop the band Heros from playing. The crowd rioted. It was one of the biggest riots in Australia’s history. Cold Chisel released a song about it in 1980. This live video also has footage of the riot. (It’s not pretty)
The only song I know by Cold Chisel is “Khe Sanh” which was played by a local album rock station (WQDR) which is also where I heard R.E.M. for the first time in 1983.
Khe Sanh was from their self titled debut released in 1978.
Then that is likely around the time I first heard it. For whatever reason it has stayed with me all these years. I don’t think I heard their name again until Jimmy Barnes recorded “Good Times” with INXS in 1987.
From the Old 97’s Too Far to Care which was released 25 years ago today. The first time I remember hearing of them they were on an episode of Austin City Limits with Whiskeytown in 1998. I liked them well enough but didn’t purchase any of their albums until the following year when I joined the Guitartown email list. There, Too Far to Care was among the many albums recommended to me. I was already a fan of alt.country but had only started to dip my toes into those waters. I can say without question that Too Far to Care was one of the albums that played a part in my full submersion.
