Another one… Land of Spirits:
“Bembe For Two”
I noticed that there’s a song named “Saturn calling” (and I understand that this band is completely unrelated to R.E.M.) but I couldn’t help to speculate about a possible allusion to “Saturn Return” though I’m sure that it’s only a coincidence with no real intention behind it.
Anyway, I haven’t listened to any of these songs yet, I’m waiting till I have my double CD and hopefully find the time to sit down and listen to it.
I have no idea, I’ve heard the song “Saturn Calling”, doesn’t sound anything like “Saturn Return” to me.
“Sweet As A Nut”
Edit : Drink The Sea have uploaded 4 more new songs & videos all at once. You can listen & view them at https://www.youtube.com/@DrinkTheSeaVEVO
Their second album came out today, I think it’s a little better than the first and a little more Peter-oriented. Honestly, not many people noticed, but Arthur Buck’s second album also came out today, and I think it’s also a little better than the first one!
First show last night, and there are a few videos popping up on YouTube. The One I Love was played, with Alain Johannes on lead vocal.
Nice interview with the band. The Mark Lanegan/Great Beyond story is pretty cool!
Some snippits from the show in Cadiz, Spain, 2nd December.
What a crazy headline this is: “Drink The Sea test the patience of their audience with a rambling two hour set“

Another review from The Yorkshire Post Gig at Brudenell Social Club, Leeds. 18th Dec./25
It appears they are planning another record.
“With Buck already at work on new songs and Martin suggesting to The Yorkshire Post that they already have studio time booked next year, it’ll be intriguing to see where this collaboration goes next.”
A new album might be a good idea. I actually wanted to attend one of their early January shows in the US (which is why I hadn’t ordered the double CD from Sunyata, wanted to personally buy from the merch table) but the possibility of travel is now less likely especially since I didn’t make any arrangements ahead of time.
So, I saw them live in Glasgow the other night. I have to be honest, I don’t love the albums. I’ve tried, I’ve given them a good few listens. They’re ok. But maybe just not my bag.
Live, however, the music comes alive for me. It was really cool watching the way they reproduced what is quite a complex and unusual set of songs.
Other than a handful of Screaming Trees and QOTSA songs, I’m not that familiar with the work of the band members that are not Peter Buck. (Though Abbey Blackwell played bass with Alvvays for a while.) So this was also a bit of an introduction to those guys for me. I particularly enjoyed watching Alain Johannes who, as well as being a brilliant musician, has a decent set of pipes on him.
Highlights included the Johannes-sung Where We Belong, and the Mad Season cover Long Gone Day. But obviously my favourite part was when they played The One I Love. What a treat to hear it played by Peter Buck, and the other guys gave it real gusto too.
And I got a picture with Buck at the end! If you’re unsure about whether to go see them or not, I’d recommend it, even if you don’t love the albums. It was a great show.
Some photos, all courtesy of my partner. Mine were rubbish…
.
Great photos! I’m not sure if they’ll ever tour this part of the world.
You never know! This was a surprisingly extensive European tour, albeit they only went to four countries. It’s definitely not fame or wealth they’re doing it for at this point. Maybe they’ll fancy a trip to Oz after album 3!
Great little Flagpole interview with Peter as posted on R.E.M.HQ
"I’m on stage with, the connection with the audience, just the pleasure of new things… It’s something that is really great. I feel incredibly lucky that I can still do this at whatever level I’m at.”
Just saw a photo on Instagram of Mike Mills onstage with Drink the Sea in Athens last night. Anyone know what song he was singing?
How cool is that! ![]()
A more favourable review posted a couple of days ago by Grace Kim of NYS Music
“(..) the project easily could have existed as a loose side venture. Instead, it felt unmistakably like a band: coherent, responsive and grounded in shared musical instinct”
