As mentioned on R.E.M. - Instagram “May 23rd is the date of the single “Outside Again” from a new group featuring me, Barrett Martin, Alain Johannes and Duke Garwood. The band is called Drink the Sea, and the albums we recorded were made around the world. I’ll let Barrett explain everything; he was there from the beginning, and it’s ultimately his.”
Barrett says, “The albums were produced and mixed by Alain and me and reflect the members vast experience as songwriters, arrangers, and singers. It also shows a strong world music influence that permeates the music. Although the songs are built around traditional guitar, bass, and drums configurations, the songs also shimmer with the sounds of Arabic oud, Indian sitar, Indonesian gamelans, and various exotic percussions like Brazilian surdo, frame drum, vibraphone, marimba, and kalimba.”
The result are 22 songs, spread across two debut albums, Drink The Sea I and Drink The Sea II.
The band will start touring in the late fall of 2025, and the first single is available now. New singles will follow every two weeks. The two albums will be released on September 19th and October 3rd, respectively.
“We’re very happy to announce the launch of Drink The Sea Vevo channel which can be watched on YouTube and on the VEVO channel on TV. There are currently 6 videos that just went live, and eventually all 22 songs from our two debut albums will have videos parked there.
These were all filmed and edited by the director Tad Fettig @fettigtad who created multiple shows for PBS, National Geographic, Discovery, and many others. His cinematography is truly exceptional and his themes tend to focus on natural landscapes, animals, and “peoplescapes” if that’s a word (or I just invented it). Anyway, please have a look at these gorgeous videos and enjoy the songs we have released so far. Thank you! Barrett”
I don’t it think would be easy capturing a meteor on film or camera. The sun setting in anticipation of seeing a meteor when the sky is dark enough maybe. My guess.
This is also great- really evocative of what the lifestyle of the Tuareg people must be like. I’m tempted to go and join them (an African Saharan Nomadic Tribe who value women and accord them high status apparently- sounds good to me anyway). I like their costumes- similar to something out of Star Wars or Dune.
I haven’t really checked this out yet, but I plan to. They’ve just announced a European tour in Nov/Dec, with several dates in Spain and the UK, as well as single dates in France and Ireland. I’ll be seeing them in Glasgow!
I’ve just read the blurb for the tour announcement, which promises a few songs from their previous bands! Well, now I’m very excited, though I guess I shouldn’t get my hopes up too much…
Haha! No I know what you mean. When in the queue at The Garage, Highbury Corner for the Shannon Narducy Fables gig, a couple walked past us and said “Peter Buck is in town” and an excited ripple went along. He didn’t appear inside or out though….! PS I keep trying to upload one or two of my videos after all - they’re not bad really-but I can’t figure out how to get them from my computer to here (I think I’ve got them from my phone to my computer- Apple and Microsoft don’t seem to get along too well……!)
That’s the Blood Red Moon over The Bosphurus, Istanbul. It’s a really magical mystical place. My Dad played in band on a cruise ship in the 70s and we stopped off there. No sign or sight of the Blood Red Moon recently here- all cloud.
