Caroline Rose - The Art of Forgetting
I’m in love with this album.
Randy Meisner was my Eagles Pin Up back in the day. I loved Take It to the Limit and Tequila Sunrise
I have this album. I took it into Oxfam a couple of weeks back and a customer came in and said good to hear some Nick Drake. He was such a gifted artist.
Yep a brilliant Bill Forsyth film and the topic still relevant today.
I was doing the same. Her “Take Me To Church” song is also brilliant and it was a shame that it got overshadowed by (Hozier’s?) song of the same name at the time it came out. Just so sad that she died in London when she’d been in Ireland until fairly recently.
I love Randy Meisner’s vocals. I listened to the Eagles a lot growing up.
You and I and Etty are all very similar I feel
I have only heard five songs from the upcoming Sextile album, Push, but it is safe to say that it will be my favorite record of 2023. I first saw them at the 2022 Cruel World music festival in California, but am also looking forward to their Atlanta show in a small venue in a couple of months.
The brand new video for “Crash”, the latest Sextile single, with guest vocals from Izzy Glaudini of Automatic, is spot-on amazing. My favorite song of the year.
Sextile has always been a marvelous post-punk/electronic act, but I love how the songs from the upcoming album evoke the aura of walking through a multiethnic neighborhood in a hipster part of town on a sunny day. Like The Clash - Sandanista! before it, the new material brings so many genres to the table, yet still maintains a singleness of effect. More new stuff…
That’s hilarious! I want to meet them however I see that they’re Canadian! They sound a bit Irish. Anyway they are clearly comedians
Mmm Sextile crash has a real otherworldly thing going on hasn’t it? If you close your eyes and pick out the repeating keyboard especially combined with the voice. Special I agree.
Oh yes- I already have this lot on my radar from Absolute Radio- a Kelly Jones side project. I love Screaming Hallelujah have you heard that one?
So to lighten the day (its a bit grey here today) here’s another funny video. I watched Blur on Radio 2 live on the BBC a couple of weeks ago (I like their new single The Narcissist- must give the album a go) and they did Parklife of course and I wondered if there was a video for it. The 90s passed me by a bit esp Blur v Oasis although I have a couple of Oasis CDs. https://youtu.be/YSuHrTfcikU?t=51Anyway, I hadn’t realised how funny the video is and soooo English! So, here it is…
Actually just to be fair to Oasis there is this very funny video to The Importance of Being Idle with Rhys Ifans:
In fact I also remember a radio piece about Peter Sellars ( a favourite of my Dad’s- his favourite film was Being There) who seemed to take a lot of things for all sorts of conditions saying he was “not ready for the old wooden overcoat just yet”. He also used to call the press photographers “ice creams” (let’s get away from these ice creams) as in ice cream freezers= geezers - cockney rhyming slang
I’ve actually met the actor in that video, Rhys Ifans. He is from West Wales (he is most definitely NOT English!!), and we both have family in the St Davids area. I’m currently listening to a fellow Welshmans music, Gruff Rhys (who, like Rhys Ifans is ex of Super Furry Animals) first band Ffa Coffi Pawb*. Gruff has just reissued their 3rd album on vinyl. It is called Hei Vidal! and this is just one of the fabulous tunes off that…
Ffa Coffi Pawb, or Coffee Beans for Everyone. Or, colloquially F&$ Off I Pawb. (F&*$ off everyone).
Yeah, that’s another good one. Also like “No Fool Like an Old Fool”.
It’s Kelly Jones plus the duo from The Wind and the Wave (who I linked to in this thread a couple months ago). Apple Music started recommending them to me, it was a good choice. I saw they’re touring Britain this fall.
Some recent spins. I’m looking forward to seeing Alvvays, Florry, and Sluice (amongst others) soon during the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC. All firsts for me.
R.E.M. Fables of the Reconstruction
Neil Young & Crazy Horse Rust Never Sleeps
Alvvays Alvvays
Jimmy Buffett A1A
The Beatles Hey Jude (aka The Beatles Again)
R.E.M. Chronic Town
Sluice Radial Gate
Florry The Holey Bible
Hiss Golden Messenger Jump For Joy
Lana Del Rey Ultraviolence
Nada Surf The Weight Is A Gift
Pearl Jam No Code

Julien Baker Little Oblivions
Well they’re from Newfoundland, which is kind of Canada. They did a lot of traditional Newfoundland music with influences from English, Irish, and French folk songs.
That song/video was done for the band’s 20th anniversary and part of the joke is they keep dropping into their old videos. The costume party with the collapsing house was “Goin’ Up”, the rugby game was “Ordinary Day”, the marionettes were “Mari-mac”, and the girl in the ocean was “Sea of No Cares”.
Sadly the band broke up right after the 20th anniversary tour though. But Alan and Sean (the main two singer/songwriters) continue to make solo albums and play old GBS songs on their tours.
I was listening to the 2nd Bonny Light Horseman album, but the Burning Down/Ages of You thread has given me a hankering for Dead Letter Office so I’m listening to that now…
