My favorite is the one where he mumbles something incoherently against the backdrop of some jangly, chiming guitar.

Haven’t tried ranking the albums for a long time, but I’ll give it a go. Other than number one, this is very changeable.

  1. Up
  2. Automatic for the People
  3. Hi-Fi
    R. Fables
  4. Out of Time
  5. Reveal
  6. Reckoning
  7. Monster
  8. Lifes Rich Pageant
  9. Around the Sun
  10. Green
  11. Murmur
  12. Document
  13. Collapse Into Now
  14. Accelerate

1 Murmur
2 Hi-fi
4 Reckoning
6 Fables
8 Reveal
9 Green

I don’t care much about the rankings after that.

Hmm. I see how easy it is to hit ‘r’ instead of ‘4’ now…

I thought you did that on purpose.

Genuinely an accident! Was gonna edit it, but if it’s good enough for Michael Stipe it’s good enough for me!

  1. Fables of the Reconstruction
  2. Monster
  3. New Adventures in Hi-Fi

(It takes a stronger soul than me to decide between the two, so regard them as joint seconds.)

  1. Lifes Rich Pageant
  2. Automatic for the People
  3. Murmur
  4. Document
  5. Out of Time
  6. Up
  7. Reckoning
  8. Collapse into Now
  9. Green
  10. Accelerate
  11. Reveal
  12. Around the Sun

I think… Don’t quote me on it, though… It honestly gets blurry after 6.

Top tier: LRP/New Adventures
Right below: Monster/Automatic/Out of Time/Up
Mid tier formidability: Fables/Document/Green
Best of the rest: Murmur/Collapse
Least loved, but still great: Reckoning/Reveal/Around the Sun/Accelerate

In all seriousness, my favorite is Fables. My least favorite is Reveal followed by Around the Sun. My favorite of the WB years with Bill Berry is New Adventures in Hi Fi. My favorite of the post Bill years is Up. My favorite era is the I.R.S. years. That’s about as close as I get to ranking their albums these days. I also have to give major props to Chronic Town. No, it’s not a full length album but as an EP it tends to get left out of these discussions.

Yeah it’s hard to rank Chronic Town with the others. I love it though.

It’s not hard to rank, it just tends to get left out when lists are confined only to full length albums.

  1. Murmur
  2. Fables of the Reconstruction
  3. Reckoning
  4. Lifes Rich Pageant
  5. Green
  6. Document
  7. New Adventures in Hi-Fi
  8. Out of Time
  9. Monster
  10. Automatic for the People
  11. Reveal
  12. Up
  13. Accelerate
  14. Around the Sun
  15. Collapse into Now

If we’re counting Chronic Town, then I’ll put it fifth place behind Lifes Rich Pageant.

If we’re ranking Chronic Town as well, I just happen to think it’s miles better than Around The Sun and Collapse Into Now put together in both quality and quantity or whatever other terms. It would probably come in 7th in my previous ranking and push Reveal to the back.

Ok I didnt do this for ages, I guess I use tiers as well as it does get muddy a bit and it changes slighlty every now and then if I give absolute numbers.
So here it goes:

Tier I:

  • New Adventures in Hi-Fi
  • Monster
  • Automatic for the People

Tier II:

  • Reckoning
  • Lifes Rich Pageant

Tier III:

  • Murmur
  • Fables of the Reconstruction
  • Out of Time
  • Green

Tier IV:

  • Document
  • Collapse into Now
  • Up

Tier V:

  • Reveal
  • Accelerate
  • Around the Sun

That narrows it down.

New Adventures in Hi-Fi
Lifes Rich Pageant
Automatic for the People
Fables of the Reconstruction of the Fables
Document #5
Chronic Town
Out of Time
Around the Sun
Collapse into Now

I will say after the fifth and ones that are IRS are not set in stone. They are all special and change randomly, because of mood.
