I’m not a member on Tik Tok. Never liked it. There was so much nonsense, disinformation and trolling I opted out. But I learned today that Trump’s new regime is intending to shut it down. I heard about it on Emily D Baker’s site. Trump is a foaming at the mouth wildebeest. He also wants to take over the Panama Canal, and invade Greenland with a view to get its natural resources.California can bite him, “they should have been prepared.” Is his response to the fires.
But let’s bypass those for now, while the rest of the world laughs at his idiocy. Tik Tok is very likely a platform some of you here enjoy. I’m interested in your opinions. The issues as I understand them is that Tik Tok has ties to China and therefore a threat to American security. In other words, they will spy on the US and spread disinformation. Tik Tok say they are an open platform. They claim they in no way edit or interfere with members’ posts. This is obviously a free speech issue. First Amendment. The Republicans can shutdown Tik Tok servers in the US if it gets voted through. What do you peeps think on this?
Emily’s informative quick bits. She’s not taking sides, but it’s such an interesting topic and she’s great at explaining.
I’ve never used Tiktok either. Occasionally I do see bits of it when others share tiktok clips on other social platforms. I don’t really have an opinion on whether it should be shut down or not. Misinformation is everywhere on the internet, I’m not sure how bad with that tiktok is.
The TikTok ban was pushed through by the Biden administration, and if anything Trump has been talking about stopping it. (he’s unlikely to actually stop it, of course.)
My kids (who are no longer kids) kill themselves laughing at Tik Tok. Manipulating/ distorting people’s photos is a thing they love and they find weird shit they like to share among themselves and their friends.
again I think you’ve got the timing wrong. it did pass awhile ago. It was bipartisan in Congress, and Biden signed it. Trump made noises about backing it off during his campaign, but he makes lots of noises about lots of things and most of them don’t happen.
I could easily have the timing wrong. As I live in the UK and ignore Tik Tok, it may have been put on hiatus in the US. This current lawsuit over it seems ongoing though. Probably because it’s a constitutional issue of 1st amendment rights.
Yeah it’s kind of a mess. I’m pretty anti TikTok though. It’s also telling that the law is actually just “needs to be divested from a Chinese company”, and rather than selling it off Bytedance will just shut it down. Why not sell it off? Unless the data exfiltration to China is the point.
The government here in Australia has passed a legislation to ban children under 16 from using social media sites which include Tiktok, Xtwitter, Snapchat & facebook, I’m not sure about some of the other social media sites. I believe it will happen around November this year. I don’t know if this is a good idea, my kids started using social media in their mid teens. Some parents say social media harms their kids and others are infuriated that the government is sticking their noses in parenting business. Apparently it will be up to the social media sites to rely on age verification technology to implement the restrictions. I don’t know how that will work out. They were talking about adding internet safety to school curriculums, which I would like to see happen, but I haven’t heard politicians here say anymore about that.
I have an account on Tik-Tok but rarely use it. Along with Snapchat it is of much more interest to my younger friends. I guess the same could be said of Instagram. They also use other social media apps but I’m not as familiar with them.
I have personal accounts on FB and IG and ones for Guitartown (a locally based community for fans of alt.country) on FB, IG, and Twitter all of which I rarely use anymore with the exception of FB. Guitartown started as an email list in the late 90s. By 2008 it had become a ghost town as everyone had migrated to FB. It has never regained steam since those days.
Many of my friends created accounts on Bluesky when Elon Musk took over Twitter. That has reached fever pitch again as of late but I haven’t joined the fray and am not sure if I will. Zuckerberg dropping fact-checking on FB has also prompted even more people to say they’re leaving for Bluesky. As sort of a joke, I created an account on MySpace (I was never on there before).
I don’t care for either Musk or Zuckerberg but I have no immediate plans to create anymore social media accounts elsewhere, at least for now. I need less social media in my life, not more. I preferred the days of email lists and message boards but I doubt they’re coming back.
