Really digging the album Lush Life by the Belair Lip Bombs, an Australian group. Though technically not “new” it was first released in the U.S. this year.

5 new songs from upcoming albums. The Patterson Hood and Lilly Hiatt songs are the latest singles from their upcoming albums. Though Patterson has often said he sets aside songs for his solo albums that he feels wouldn’t fit the feel of Drive-By Truckers records, for the most part, they haven’t always struck me that way. At least until his last one, Heat Lightning Rumbles in the Distance.
This newest single is atmospheric and features a flute (Steve Berlin from Los Lobos) which, to my ears sounds like his most significant departure from the sound I most strongly associate with him both with and without the Truckers. Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams is out on February 21st.

Lilly Hiatt continues to evolve but I’m not sure how to describe it exactly except to say maybe she sounds more self-assured. Forever will be released on January 31st.

The first single from Will Stewart’s next album finds him in more of a rocking mode rather than the country-ish, contemplative one that largely defined his previous records. Moon Winx is due for release on February 28th.

I have been lukewarm on the vast majority of Jason Isbell’s more recent albums, even skipping at least one of them all together. The music is likable enough it’s just that to my ears it started to sound so safe and polished. His new one is all solo acoustic. On first listen, I’m really enjoying this new single. Foxes In the Snow comes out on March 7th.

“Sugar In the Tank” is the first single from the debut album by Julien Baker and Torres. Before the single was released they performed the song live on The Tonight Show. The music video was set to debut a few days ago but was delayed due to the wildfires in California. No release date has been announced for the album, at least that I’m aware of.

New from Lydia Loveless and John Calvin Abney. Per her IG, as she works toward an EP and full length record she’s going to release a new song on Bandcamp every month. This is one written by Irving Berlin.

Another outtake from Tigers Blood. I can only guess there’s going to be a deluxe edition of this record at some point.

It is but I still wouldn’t be surprised to see these tracks (as well as others) show up as part of a deluxe release of Tigers Blood.

Starting in January Lydia Loveless has been uploading one new song per month to her Bandcamp. The first was a cover of a song written by Irving Berlin. This is last month’s entry.
