From a new series that started last year on PBS North Carolina that focuses solely on NC artists. I first heard of the Connells thanks to a compilation of local artists called Welcome To Comboland that came out in 1987 but didn’t really become a fan until I heard Boylan Heights, released that same year. The whole Comboland thing is part of the same scene that gave rise not just to bands like the Connells but also R.E.M., who figure prominently in the interview below. This sort of recognition for the Connells is long overdue. I’m thrilled to see it.
