to me, this is one of stipe’s finest performances. everyone’s individual parts are perfect — buck on mandolin, berry on bass, and mike on organ (or accordian?) — but stipe is on another plane here. just pure heart and melody, and a beautiful lyric that defies (or transcends) literal meaning. he conjured something really cool
