My wife and I are traveling to Dublin and France as a celebration of our 25th anniversary next month and I know that R.E.M. has a number of Dublin/Dalkey connections. Off the top of my head, the R.E.M. LIVE release and the LIVE AT THE OLYMPIA are both Dublin performances and large percentage of Michael’s vocals for REVEAL were recorded in a house in Dalkey. But, what else? Does anybody here have any other information about R.E.M. in Ireland to share?
I hope you both have a wonderful 25th wedding anniversary.
Not sure if you already know the following. I found some info on google.
R.E.M. performed at Slane Castle in 1995
They also played at Ardgillan Castle, another site with a stage set amidst the castle
R.E.M. were fascinated by the Dublin suburb of Greenhills, where they worked with producers Pat McCarthy and Garret “Jacknife” Lee, who both played in the same garage band in Greenhills.
Hi there, Congratulations on your anniversary! I saw them Slane, Co. Meath in 1995 & at the old Lansdowne Road in 1999, since replaced by the Aviva Stadium. The REM Live release was recorded at what was the Point Depot in Dublin and is now called the 3Arena. Strings for Reveal were done at Windmill Lane, which is also - along with the sites mentioned above - steeped in U2 heritage. Imitation of Life appears on this. (I got engaged at Windmill Lane once…) The Olympia is a grand spot. I had pre-sale access for those (not)shows but couldn’t make it back. That was a bad move and I still regret it.
That’s interesting! I wasn’t aware of the McCarthy-Jacknife Lee connection! …or that Lee was Irish! I did know about the castle performances, though. Thanks for your response!
