Post a live video

On this day in 1968, The Jackson Five signed a one year contract with Motown Records.

“I Want You Back” was one of the songs debuted out of four consecutive No.1 hits.

I saw them at Roundhay Park in Leeds that tour. They were brilliant. I don’t like their music after Joshua Tree so much, but what a show. They were the 13 year old me’s band in the early-mid 80s.

Talking about scalpers, I sold a ticket to see the REM Monster tour in Milton Keynes outside for £5 to a fan who was about to pay a scalper £50. I was supposed to go with a mate but he had been called to a second tour of Northern Ireland.

I was lucky enough to catch Radiohead on this tour 30 years ago in June 1992 at a venue local to me the Buckley Tivoli in North Wales (about 5 miles from Chester). From my addled memory they supported The Frank And Walters… They were that good - Creep was a standout then, that scratchy guitar - we went to later gigs at Liverpool Krazy House and Stoke Wheatsheaf (with Richard Hawleys band the Longpigs). We also went the next year when they headlined the Tivoli supporting the Pablo Honey album. Then Creep blew up and I never saw them again. I often wonder what happened to them.

The show South Park had a 25th anniversary concert a couple weeks ago at Red Rocks, featuring Primus, Ween, and Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the South Park creators.

Anyway, partway through, as a complete surprise, Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee from Rush showed up, and they joined in to play “Closer to the Heart”.

This is the first time they’ve performed a Rush song in public since the last show of the tour in 2015, and the first time they’ve played together in public at all since Neil Peart passed away in Jan 2020. (Last time I heard anything from them in interviews, they said that they meet up all the time, but every time they bring instruments and plan to jam some, they never get around to it, so I don’t know how much they’ve played together in private either.) Matt Stone is playing drums, and didn’t know about this in advance, and is obviously in total shock.

Geddy is 70 years old or something, hasn’t played a Rush song in 7 years, and does not skip a beat launching right into the opening lines of the song (which are not easy to sing).

Tame Impala “Let it Happen” live in Adelaide 2022

I first heard of Julia Jacklin via one of her songs being included in Uncut’s monthly Playlist feature. I believe this was circa 2019 when her newest album was Crushing. I’ve only recently gotten around to listening to any of her albums and started with that one. Of her three albums it is my favorite so far. Her latest is 2022’s Pre Pleasure. This live performance was uploaded by KEXP a few days ago.

Alvvays at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC on Wednesday. I love this band and have been wanting to see them since I first started listening to them a year ago but I was unable to attend this show. So glad someone filmed it. Not the same as being there for sure but the next best thing.
