This is an essay I’ve had kicking around for a while that was finally published today. If anyone here is interested in contributing to the website (I Have That On Vinyl) all the info you need can be found there.
My first record player was a small portable Sanyo my parents picked up duty free on a trip overseas. I was like 12 or 13y.o. My first records were the Osmond Brothers, I can’t even remember where I got the money to buy them, or maybe they were a special occasion gift. My parents eventually got a stereo system in a cabinet with a record player & radio built in. When I started working I bought my own hifi system which I still have. It must be over 40 y.o. now would you believe. It still sounds great except the turntable arm doesn’t function automatically anymore, still capable of playing records though. I keep putting off getting a new turntable because I know it’s going to cost me a few $100 for a decent one. Maybe towards the end of this year.
Up until a few years ago I never really owned a nicer home stereo system, I always invested more money in stereo systems for my vehicles because that became where I listened to music the most. I bought that stereo system used. Unfortunately, the receiver was faulty so I only got a month or two out of it. I could probably get it fixed but I don’t have the means at present. Nor do I have the space. I will say, no matter how briefly, it sure was nice to have a way to play my vinyl again.
On the portables tip, I’m waiting for the day when a used copy of this book from Dust and Grooves shows up at a reasonable price. I’ve seen a lot of portables at record shows and just think they’re cool.
