MTV to axe its music TV channels in the UK (BBC)

Though I haven’t heard any official word, scuttlebutt is, this will eventually happen in the US as well and I’m guessing anywhere else where MTV is still being broadcast. I wasn’t really paying close attention when it happened but to me, MTV died long ago. The last time I had cable was 2008-2010 and the only music television I watched was VH1 Classic.

When MTV first signed on I was in a rural part of Eastern North Carolina that didn’t have cable. Still, it played an important role in informing our playlist at a college radio station I worked at in a neighboring county. Throughout most of the 80s I only caught brief glimpses of it here and there. By the time cable came to my area in 1989 MTV wasn’t the same. There were still VJs pulling airshifts but there was also a lot of regular programming.
My favorites were 120 Minutes, Postmodern MTV, The Week In Rock, the Rockumentaries, and Unplugged. As the 90s arrived, as I recall, the reality shows weren’t too far behind. Eventually, they started to dominate the programming. By that time, I no longer had cable and wasn’t really paying that much attention anymore. I certainly enjoyed it while it lasted but I don’t think I have the sentimental attachment to it that so many that were watching from the beginning do.

I’ve never had cable tv, so wasn’t able to watch it, except for the MTV videos that have appeared on youtube.
