Idle thought – I suppose this is standard for singer-songwriters who keep performing for a long time, but I wonder if Mike feels weird to be almost 70 and still singing a song about a girl he had a crush on in college? Or is it completely dissociated from that to him now?
I just thought it was one of his favourite R.E.M. songs to sing, he does sing it well. On your idle thought, Mike also sang “Ápartment #9” on the night, a Bobby Austin song I believe was covered by Tammy Wynette.
I read an interview with another songwriter from a band I like about one of his songs that they’ve played at practically every show for the past 20+ years. He said how he never thinks about the girl he wrote the song about anymore, it’s just about having a good performance, the audience reaction, etc.
