Michael on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

As posted on R.E.M. HQ. This Thursday 4/23. I don’t have access to The Late Show on my TV. I should be able to watch it online somewhere.

I expect it will be an interview, which is great, but I wonder if he might be performing a song… We can but hope!

Haven’t seen this yet, but I just saw a couple of clips on Instagram. Looks like he performed a new song (with full band!) called Rest of Ever. And he also said he’s currently writing the final lyrics for his solo album. This might be almost, kind of, nearly happening! Yay!

New song sounds great. Late period Bryan Ferry vibes.

I noticed he says he’s finalizing the lyrics but doesn’t mention if the music is close to being finished. I’d be kind of surprised if the lyrics were the last thing he did since you would think that’s the part of the songwriting process he’s most familiar with.

I think the lyrics are usually last. I remember a quote from Buck or maybe Mills, years ago, saying that the lyrics were always the last thing to finish as Stipe needed to be inspired. Or something like that. I’d say it’ll still be same, even though he’s more involved with music. Lyrics generally come after music/melody for most songwriters. But I could be wrong!

Anyway, I like the song. I’ve liked all the songs he’s released so far, even the ones that are all beeps and synths. Really excited for this album.

Of what I’ve heard of it, I’ve largely been indifferent to his solo material. This, I liked more than I was expecting to.

It’s doubtful I go through with it but I need to exorcise myself from social media once and for all. I realize everyone’s not going to feel the same way, even fellow R.E.M. fans but the outright disrespectfulness and cruelty in response to this is beyond the pale. Then, there’s the usual insults about his beard and the calls for R.E.M. to reunite. There’s a way to respectfully disagree but that seems to have gone out the window in favor of being as derogatory as possible.
