He was first put on my radar by friends recommending the movie Once, which remains among my favorites of all time, music related or otherwise. That said, I’ve never really taken a deep dive into his music, including his work with the Frames but I did have the good fortune to see him with The Swell Season once. I’ve also always appreciated his take on R.E.M.’s “Hairshirt” which first came to my attention when he performed it during a tribute to them at Carnegie Hall in 2009.

Yeah, I was really shocked and saddened to see this. Like you, I’m not overly familiar with his catalogue, but his version of Hairshirt is excellent. Seemed a really good guy too, humble and supportive of other artists. Really tragic.

Same. Unfortunately, we live in a day and age where it has become increasingly difficult to tell fact from fiction. There are also people out there in search of the almighty click that will do so no matter what.
