Speaking of Ben Folds, that one makes me laugh, this one makes me cry:

I can’t get enough of The Connells’ “Stars” at the moment which someone else posted on here (thank you!) but these 2 tracks reminded me of the closing/end song for Richard Linklater’s film Boyhood - Hero by Family of the Year

Richard Linklater’s film Boyhood

I loved that movie. Thanks for posting that song, I didn’t remember it. I only saw the movie once and I’m not sure I could watch it again even though I thought it was great.

Yes, likewise. Some end credit songs really seem to stay with me. Another is Nod ya Head (Men in Black) and also Coldplay’s The Scientist as sung by Willie Nelson at the end of The Judge.

Listening to the Beatles today. Maybe you’ve heard of them?

You’ve just reminded me of this live version of “Yesterday” by Willie Nelson which he introduces as being by “a pretty fair little country group known as the Beatles.” The album (Willie Nelson - Live: I Gotta Get Drunk) is from 1976 but I’m not sure when it was recorded. I don’t think it was the first Willie album I owned but it was among them. It would have also been among the first albums I ever owned in general.

My actual favorite Beatles song is “Penny Lane”. The piccolo trumpet solo during the instrumental break is one of the greatest things in music history.

If you listen to this man’s voice and guitar with your eyes closed there is something just so special and beautiful about it.

Speaking of the Beatles, coincidentally today I see Paul has finished up “Now and Then” (the third song they started to put together for Anthology after “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love”, but they never finished it) and it’s being released as “the last Beatles song” next week.

I’ll give it a listen. Some people didn’t like the Anthology songs but I was fine with them.

Now and Then:

It’s, you know, fine. I do think it sounds better than Free as a Bird or Real Love.

I don’t listen to any R. E.M post Hi Fi. To me Bill took a significant part of the band’s mojo and magic. Each following album seems a bit more lame. I know I’ll probably get flamed for this. One factor is the lyrics. When I look back on how brilliant they were at their peak, it’s just depressing. I’m not even sure which album or even song it’s from the song that has “I’m a lamb without a rack” and other banalities on it I just went cold. I gave every post Bill album a listen. This was not the band I was so passionate about. They seemed to be treading water. Each album was less good following. It’s reflected in the sales figures so it’s not just me. Up has its moments, but after that I’d rather look for another artist to fill the REM hole. And I was such a devoted fan! I would travel to see them, even to other countries.
I know this is an unpopular opinion, especially here, but it’s how I feel.

“Come As You Are”

Continuing my trend this year of “finally return to going to the movie theater post COVID but only seeing old movies”, went to see Gladiator last night. (Though it’s not that old, I saw it in the theater the first time right before I graduated high school.)

Anyway I have always loved that soundtrack. Especially from the opening Germania battle, which is one of my favorite movie battle scenes. I’m glad this movie was made before everything got too CGI’d up.

That music is at least 75% cribbed from “Mars, Bringer of War”, but who cares. Steal from the best.

@Pelagius42 “New album or EP?”

The vocals are quiet like a mouse in the background. I’d like to hear the vocals louder & urgent. And yes, it could be a really good album or EP :+1:
