I really like Nilüfer Yanya - Painless and Fontaines DC - Skinty Fia albums this year as well.

I’d like to add Bartees Strange and his album Farm to Table to the discussion. I’ve really become enamored of Bartees and it definitely helps that he has a stellar ep of The National covers.

Below are some current favorites. There are still more than a few that I haven’t gotten to checking out including the latest from Wilco and the Dead Tongues. It’s more than telling that I haven’t gotten around to the new Wilco yet as over time, I’ve been less and less enamored of their newer albums. This started around the time of The Whole Love. Ode to Joy became the first album of theirs I didn’t purchase.

These are my favorite albums of the year. There are more that I listened to but these are the ones that stood out most to me in one way or another. Some, I’ve spent more of a considerable amount of time with than others. There are also others I just never got around to. Nothing against them but there are only so many hours in a day and as much as I’d love to, I’m not able to devote but so much time per day listening to music. That’s mostly in my car going to and from work, road trips, and beach trips.

I don’t use any apps to track my listening habits but I can say without question that the album I listened to most in 2022 was Julia Jacklin’s Crushing from 2019. That was followed closely by Alvvays’ debut from 2014. It was a year of catching up for me after going roughly two years without listening to anything beyond single songs on my laptop. Other albums from previous years I got around to in 2022 that got multiple spins also include Margo Cilker’s Pohorylle and the debut album from Mylee Grace, Whiplash in the Moshpit, both from 2021. My favorite song of the year is “Wilder Days” by Drive-By Truckers which also just so happens to come from my favorite album of the year, Welcome 2 Club XIII. RIP, Wes Freed.

I also have to mention a late entry, Delusions of Grandeur by Sophie and the Broken Things. Sophie was Margo Cilker’s lead guitarist when I saw her at Cat’s Cradle - Back Room back in September where she proceeded to tear that shit up throughout the show. She told me about her band then but I just now got around to listening to their debut album. If not for seeing her with Margo I wouldn’t know about it. If you’re a fan of the roots rock/Americana thing, it should be right up your alley. I hear shades of Emmylou (among other influences) but their sound is all their own. Highly recommended.

There have been such great records released this year, but I think the two I’ve listened to the most are the Alvvays record and Bartees Strange’s Farm to Table. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs got a lot of play and the new Built to Spill is really fantastic too. A dark horse that kept creeping into my playlists was Anand Wilder’s (of Yeasayer) record I Don’t Know My Words. A great groovy collection of songs.

I only listened to one full album last year and it was Muse’s “Will Of The People”. I like it ok, which is better than I could say about some of their albums.

My favourite albums this year (and like DriverNate there’s a lot I haven’t got to yet):

Big Thief
Alvvays
Bonny Light Horsemen
Haines/Buck

My favourite album from this year is actually from last year, but I only listened to it this year: War on Drugs - I Don’t Live Here Anymore.

Obviously, by this year, I mean last year. And by last year, I mean the year before last.

I think.

Happy new year all. Here’s to the Up reissue, and a Stipe solo album!

There’s definitely a lot of stuff in this post that I need to check out.

Three of my fave’s for the year are:

Spoon - Lucifer on the Sofa (and Moon)
Andrew Bird - Inside Problems.
Ball Park Music - Weirder and Weirder.

Ball Park Music would be my pick of the 3 and would easily be my most-listened-to 2022 release.
