I got the boot from Meta yesterday for no apparent reason other than they said my account is in violation of their “Community Standards.” No specific reason was cited. I appealed the decision but if they don’t approve it’ll be all for the best, especially considering what FB has become and has always been to one extent or another. If any of you wish to find me on Bluesky, I’ve created an account there:
It’s happening to a lot of people, I think. Funny thing is, I’ve reported so many things on meta sites over the years, racism, sectarianism, transphobia etc… Every single time, I’ve received a message saying that the post I reported has not breached their guidelines. Social media really is the pits. BlueSky seems ok at the moment. Hopefully it’ll stay that way.
My experience so far is that BlueSky is the social media equivalent of watching paint dry. Maybe it would be different if most of the people I know that created BlueSky accounts were actually active there. Unfortunately, they’re not.
I joined bluesky to follow those I like who went missing on meta. Been busy for the last few weeks & haven’t had enough time for social media. Facebook still sucks in that not much has been done to stop scammers, fakes & junk friend requests.
That, and a big issue for some has been having seemingly innocuous content flagged for being in violation of their “community standards.” In the past, usually some vague explanation was given. This time, none was given (in my case). Then, there’s Zuckerberg’s ties to Trump. Despite all this, no matter how much people object, they’re going to stay where there’s a higher level of engagement. Some fellow Drive-By Truckers fans created a server on Discord but I’m pretty much the only one that posts there. Same with Murmurs, though I’m definitely not the only one that posts here.
I’m wondering, if you might have told one too many to fuck off. Not saying that they didn’t deserved it.
I honestly have no idea and figure in the long run it’s all for the best. The downside is losing contact with the friends I made through there and losing my content.
I was on Facebook for the shortest time. Some random guy in Colorado contacted me - not sure if he thought it was a dating site and that he was contacting someone in the USA. I told him all about my Mum’s wartime experiences with American GIs ( she enjoyed going to the dances at their base and nearly married a pilot) and never heard from him again. I decided I didn’t need to be on it. I’ve never heard of Bluesky (although bluesky thinking was a management thing years ago). I’m a technophobe at the best of times and its all too much for me to keep up with
If I could go back to the days of email lists and message boards I would. The main reason I got on FB is because pretty much everyone I knew from email lists and message boards abandoned those for FB.
I still don’t really use facebook groups much, and definitely not public ones. there’s one private group I’m in for another band, but other than that I don’t use them for anything. Loving message boards is why I still come here every day, as well as another one that’s hanging around.
I went off fb quite a while ago. I see it as a gateway for scammers and people of bad intent. I’ve never been told off for inappropriate posts there, but I have had to block a couple of creeps I don’t know from Adam. I’m not posting my daily life or especially my family’s info. Call me paranoid but that place just gives me the creeps.
I try not to follow too many on bluesky & other sites, only those I’m familiar with or accounts I have an strong interest in, otherwise it starts to become endless scrolling. As you said, too much to keep up with.
My experience with FB, xtwitter & Insta fakes - People purporting to be a famous or a well known person. Someone who claims to be in the military or an engineer working on a oil rig somewhere in the middle east. They usually have only pictures of themselves on their account (probably stolen from someone else) Pictures of flowers or love hearts & mostly females as friends. Sweet old ladies dying from a terminal illness, who want to share the millions they have in the bank. Anyone I don’t know who calls me “dear”.
It’s important to keep in mind that Zuckerberg created FB as a way to stalk his female classmates in college. I stayed despite all the other horrible things about it including him being in cahoots with Trump. Lots of people I know that are also aware of all this remain on the platform just as I did because it’s where most everyone is.
As mentioned, I haven’t been too taken with BlueSky. However, I have found another app geared towards book readers that I enjoy. So far, I’ve seen nothing but fellow members being cool to each other. It’s pretty refreshing.
