Yeah, they’re all amazing, pro musicians. Just none of them Individually have the ability to sit alongside the most technically gifted musicians. I’d probably say Mikes Bass playing is the most technically accomplished element.
That said, it is quite a difficult point to get across without sounding like your playing them down. Technual ability is only one piece of the pie in popular music. You’ll always find Peter and say Steve Jones of the Sex pistols, somewhere between 50-100 on greatest guitarists lists. They’ll be guitarists they beat who’s music Pete and Steve probably couldn’t even play to a reasonable standard, because it’s way above their proficiency. Technical ability has no bearing on originality, creativity, and ultimately, importance.
R.E.M. are perhaps one of the best examples of being greater than the sum of their parts. That’s not to say they’re not brilliant musicians, just that they don’t have a Slash, Flea or John Bonham in their ranks.
