Sales boost for It's the end of the World.......

31 December 2012 - 10:00 AM

Posted: 12/29/2012

R.E.M.'s doomsday anthem IT'S THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT (AND I FEEL FINE) has been given a big sales boost thanks to last week's (21Dec12) Mayan apocalypse prophecy.
The ancient race declared the world would end on 21 December, 2012 - but the date came and went without incident.
However, radio station programmers decided to have a little fun with the prediction and filled the airwaves with the disbanded group's 1988 hit.
As a result, music fans picked up on the fun and snapped up the track on iTunes.com and other online digital services, swelling downloads from 3,000 the previous week to 19,000 during the 17-23 December sales week.
The flood of interest gave R.E.M. another hit - the song re-entered the Rock Digital Songs chart at number 18 and Alternative Digital Songs at 14, according to Billboard.com.

Michael reference in Science article

04 December 2012 - 05:19 AM

Lately I have been seeing quite a few articles online that mention Michael or R.E.M. when I do a search in the news section of google or yahoo.

Like this one.

What do Michael Stipe and Dr. David Carroll have in common? Neither of them like the "fluorescent, flat, caffeine lights" that fill our offices and public spaces. Unlike R.E.M.'s lead singer, however, Carroll is actually trying to do something about them.

Or this one.

R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe had it right when he sang that everybody hurts sometimes. But when someone hurts all the time, there's a problem.

Some R.E.M. love for Feeling Gravity's Pull

23 November 2012 - 12:18 PM

I love this new article.

Excerpt: The star, of course, was Michael Stipe. His hair was cropped and dyed blond. Pinned to his jacket were a selection of wristwatches. And written backwards across his forehead was the word "DOG". These days I might be inclined to roll my eyes. At 16, I thought he was a riddle wrapped inside an enigma all bundled up in mystery, which was surely what I was supposed to think.

I am hoping a Michael fan somewhere snapped a shot of this painting.  I'm curious.
