In Topic: Peter Buck working on solo record

07 May 2013 - 07:27 PM

I just noticed on amazon and a couple of other web stores that there'll be a second pressing of the Peter Buck album for sale, the amazon.com note says: "This title will be released on July 16, 2013".

I wonder if there'll be any differences with respect to the first edition, most likely there won't be, it's just a new pressing being offered, I believe the first limited edition was printed in only 2,000 copies if I recall correctly.

This is the product being advertised on amazon.com: http://www.amazon.co...67981784&sr=8-1

This is the other merchant, who talks specifically of a repress: http://www.spincds.c...-diary-cd-39077

Also since it's the first time I post in this thread I'd like to write a few lines about the album, I think I liked the photographs on the back cover, with Lenny Kaye and Mike Mills, definitely the highlight of the album is SOme Kind of Velvet Sunday Morning, it's such a beautiful song with mesmerizing lyrics and vocals, especially those of Annalisa Tornfelt. It's a song that really makes me reflect about the current state of things and it has become a favourite, the other song I like is Hard Old World, I think this track best represents the sound and the concept of the whole album -coincidentally it's a song with Peter's vocals. My only regret and my only complain is that there wasn't a digital album offered for sale, since I'm a neophyte in sound transfer and stuff, the copy I carry in my iPod just sounds awful, I feel as though I'm not really appreciating the true sound of the LP, maybe I should actually sit down to properly listen next to the turntable, but I do regret this, I would have been more than willing to pay for both the LP and the iTunes download.

I thought about trying to post Chris' Todos Santos updates from the R.E.M. Timeline from Facebook on Murmurs but doing so would have become a full time job. I love R.E.M. and I love this place but I'll be honest, with traffic at Murmurs pretty much coming to a standstill, I wasn't sure if it was worth the time and effort to repost everything here. And when I say "everything", I mean a lot as the updates from Todos Santos were plentiful and frequent. I appreciate the amount of work that goes into the Timeline (both the website and the Facebook page) but that is done by a team of people. Murmurs no longer has a "crew" per se so the work is left to those of us that have moderator privileges, which is very few. Perhaps if you were to request Mod privileges from Ethan, you could post your updates directly to the R.E.M. News section. Just a suggestion, as you do a remarkable job of updating the site with new information. Again, I do prefer Murmurs to Facebook as far as discussion but FB does have an advantage over Murmurs in that posting links, videos, real time updates, etc. is more immediate and less time consuming. It's still a shit ton of work I'm sure but like it or not, this place is still a virtual ghost town so I sort of understand folks like Chris concentrating their efforts on FB and not here. Again, not a slight against anyone, just an observation as I have been outspoken myself in regards to the downward turn Murmurs has taken in recent years. A lot of that has to do with social media in general, as well as R.E.M. becoming inactive. Even though they're defunct, there will also be fans anxious to discuss their past, as well as solo endeavors and archival releases such as the upcoming 25th anniversary reissue of Green but very few of us are doing that at Murmurs anymore. I prefer the format here, especially for discussion but it's pretty clear at this point that we're in the minority.

Thank you for the kind comments Driver Nate, I don't plan to request moderator privileges, I just couldn't do it for various reasons, namely other responsibilities I have, I prefer to continue being just a foot soldier here :)

With respect to the conversation I was having with chrisha I apologise if I overreacted, unfortunately the term agenda has very negative connotations when it's just journalistic jargon, I promise to visit the R.E.M. timeline more often.

Finally in what concerns the Green re-issue there's Hairshirt with I have always found very appealing as a song, I'm looking forward to hearing the remastered version. I especially like the mandolin in various tracks of the album, and the lyrics, World Leader Pretend if I recall correctly has some of the most engaging lyrics, I must confess it's not an album I revisit that often compared to perhaps Accelerate or Rich Pageant but I like to play You are the Everything, when the occasion is right, and Turn You Inside Out with all its Discoverer similarity helps me bridge the time gap and rapidly fast forward from 1988 to 2011, in the various stops of that timeframe I quickly reflect upon past events of R.E.M. career and past event of my personal life as well.

I remember a few weeks ago stumbling upon this photograph, apparently taken during the Green era, Out of Time era perhaps, it's on a greenpeace website.

I was referring more to the 'recently unearthed' part, as this Promo has been readily available to buy over the years, and serious collectors would expect to have this in their collection or know about it.

The R.E.M. Timeline webpage & Facebook page caters for all R.E.M. related live performances, & is more for the current & historical/archival live & recording documentation of the band (& any side-bands such as The Minus 5 & Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3), rather than Murmurs which is more a forum for REM fans. So they go together side by side, just as other bands have live web chronologies, ie Nirvana, Pearl Jam, U2 come to mind.

Bertis has said to me personally that they use us as the bands live archival reference, which we are very proud of, as it's been a lot of hard work.

Chris H

I think the language they're employing in the publication is aimed at a different type of public, perhaps not the serious collector, the aim of the marketers after all is to sell CDs to a broad audience. Honestly, this is the first time I expose myself to this content, since I don't buy on ebay and know very little about bootlegs, I don't pretend to know everything about the band and that's maybe the reason I frequent here I try to learn new things, so I´m happy to have stumbled upon this, whether via Pitchfork, Spin or Soundcloud.

With respect to the R.E.M: timeline I was simply amazed at the wealth of information they stock, it's really very detailed and concise, I have used it as a reference on various occassions. I did read the comments Bertis made, I also congratulate you and your entire team for all your hard work.

But I like to do my own research, it's my type of personality perhaps, and I have been a journalist in the past I don't like others to set an agenda for me or tell me what's news and what isn't. I would like you people involved with the timeline, for instance, to also post here and start threads, start enriching this message board, you have valuable content you could submit here. If murmurs does not reflect the current state of R.E.M. affairs and seems out of sync is because people decide just not to post it, for whatever reasons they see fit.

On the other hand, here in murmurs I can submit my own content which is not the case with the timeline as it's posted by someone else. Personally I don't see any conflict, people who like murmurs could just stay here, and people who like facebook can stay there,we can even coexist, I don´t see any conflict and yet this is the second time I'm told that the stuff I post here is redundant because it's already been posted on the timeline.

Pitchfork state on their site: This recently unearthed archival feature is not included on the reissue. A bit misleading as this promo interview is usually quite readily available on ebay & R.E.M. collectors would more than likely have this in their collections.

I think it's a good idea that they mention it's not included in the re-issue, so that people know what they're actually purchasing. I don't acquire much stuff on ebay, I mostly buy official releases, that probably makes me a different type of fan. Sorry I didn't notice your post on the timeline two weeks ago, I don't spénd much time on facebook -although some people insist that I should- I spend most of my time online here, I actually see the timeline on facebook and murmurs as separate entities.

R.E.M. Talk 'Green' in Nearly Hour-Long 1988 Radio Special
May 6 2013, 12:42 PM ET
by Marc Hogan, Spin.com

"I used to the king of jangle, and I have absolutely no interest in doing that anymore." That's R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, speaking in a 1988 radio special streaming now over at Pitchfork. The nearly hour-long, four-part special focuses on the band's breakout major-album that same year, Green, which is being reissued on May 14 via Rhino. The radio set, containing interviews with Buck, Michael Stipe, Mike Mill, and Bill Berry, isn't part of the reissue. The band members' conversations here are endearingly self-effacing but also help put a legendary album in its proper historical context, with references to Big Star and other influences, plus insights into how the group's music had changed. "I have absolutely no sense of rhythm and I never have," Stipe says at one point. Little did this rhythmless, no-longer-jangling band know they were about to release a double-platinum album.
