Spain's Amaral have released a new single: "Hacia lo salvaje". A panel of Rolling Stone critics has said that the song pushes the guitar sound upfront while "echoing Peter Buck".
Their online campaign s in fact reminiscent of Collapse into Now, as they are accompanying the song with a lyric video. The drumming reminds me of Discoverer. Judge for yourself whether this is indeed an R.E.M.-like band from Spain:

"The Hardest Part" by Coldplay sounds very REM-like. It was even stated by the band to be their "REM tribute" I still say that the REM sound is their own, and no one can or ever will copy it. But u can't blame anyone for wanting to try.
Yep. Not coincidentally, "The Hardest Part" is my favorite Coldplay song.

The Byrds. Though they came before R.E.M. and are an acknowledged influence on their early work, it still bears mentioning. I don't think it's possible to truly appreciate Peter Buck's playing without noting The Byrds' influence on him.

Swervedriver. This band should have been MASSIVE.
This song is very reminiscent of the LRP-Document era.

It's the poison that it measures
Brings illuminating vision
It's the knowing with a wink
That we expect in Southern women
It's the wolf that knows which root to dig to save itself
It's the octopus that crawled back to the sea.

I just became aware of this song (of this band) thanks to Scott McCaughey, who in this article (http://rogercatlin.c...k-without-buck/) is quoted as saying that "Shake some action" by the Flaming' Groovies "should be the National Anthem".
The song sounds like a track from Reckoning:

This particular one from Dave Graney N' Coral Snakes, the guitar sounds so R.E.M. influenced.

I can't believe no one mentioned the Go-Betweens !
The Go-Betweens did sound r.e.m.-like on occasion. More generally, i think they shared a general artistic in the 80s. (Of note: they supported r.e.m. on the 'green' tour; amanda played violin with r.e.m. on the 'monster' tour; and grant recorded one of his solo albums in an athens recording studio where (i beleive) r.e.m. had recorded)
Another band with an r.e.m.-like song (which i am reminded of lyrically every time i listed to 'Me Marlon Brando Marlon Brando and I')

I agree - The Go-Betweens went through several musical phases and they sometimes did sound a lot like R.E.M., not always.
I love this band from Seattle. I discovered the Turn-Ons thanks to Peter Buck and the Uncut R.E.M. collection disk. They're great. They remind me of LRP-era R.E.M.
