Something about "The Engine Driver" by the Decemberists reminds me of R.E.M.--maybe it's the guitar sound. Not sure.

The first time I heard this song I too was instantly reminded of mid-80's R.E.M.

'Rattlesnake', 'Insomnia & the Hole in the Universe' and 'Pillar of Davidson' all songs by Live sound very much like REM to me, especially Ed Kowalcyk's vocals.

I would also agree with an earlier post that Live's 'Selling the Drama' is another that has an REM sound to it.

I think Guided By Voices has some REM-like material. Look for songs like Cheyenne from Universal Truths And Cylcles and or Where I Come From from Suitcase.

fiel a la vega, a local band, made a very r.e.m.- like song called "al frente" about seven years ago.
the video of the link is in very bad condition but the intro gives a hint of the rest.

did you mean "after hours"?

Even better examples I suppose. Last ones I'll contribute: The Official Ironmen Rally Song  or Atom Eyes from GBV's Under The Bushes Under The Stars.

Counting Crows, Gin Blossoms, and others. I've got a song "Yellow Mountains" where I played mandolin and the radio station DJ told me it sounded like R.E.M. I bit my lip, laughed inside and thought "if he only knew". www.myspace.com/craigfranklinmusic I hope you like it. There are some other ones I have that might work as well.

I can't believe no one mentioned the Go-Betweens !

Interesting thread, glad it was unearthed after all these years.

Some additions:

The Decemberists - We Both Go Down Together (the Buck-tracks on The King Is Dead are too obvious to really mention :P)
Idlewild - I Understand It
Delays - Nearer Than Heaven

Is it dumb do mention "Calamity Song" now?

Never mind...it helps if I read prior posts.

Idlewild are obviously massively influenced by REM. Every time I hear them, especially the singer Roddy and plenty of guitar parts, it always reminds me of REM. Like this one, it's heavier than anything REM have ever done but you just hear Michael in his voice.

Definitely agree with you!

"And the train conductor says take a break Driver 8, Driver 8 take a break, we've been on this shift too long"

It also reminds me of Wichita Lineman as he sings of being a Lineman, and he has "power lines in my blood lines"

I think this song is a clear tip of the hat to R.E.M. and Glen Campbell

Nothing sounds like R.E.M. otherwise I'd be listening to them.  Heck even R.E.M. don't really sound like R.E.M. with each new album.

As mentioned by WaterHyacinth (Live - Selling The Drama)

Also

'Pillar of Davidson' and 'Rattlesnake' by Live

For some reason I always likened Crowded House to R.E.M. also.

Well the Decemberists have been mentioned twice already, but

This song has got to take the cake

Of course, it helps that Peter Buck happens to be playing lead guitar...
