I saw Counting Crows on Saturday, and I was discussing R.E.M. with people around me.  A lot of them agreed that "New Frontier" sounded like it could be an R.E.M. song.  (lyrically, I assume)

What songs do you think sound like R.E.M.?

:D LE-OH-NARD WHAT'S HIS NAME?, HERMAN MUNSTER, MOTORCADE, BIRTHDAY PARTY, CHEETOS, POGO STICKS, LEMONADE, YOU SYMBIOTIC STUPID JERK, THAT'S RIGHT FLANDERS, I AM TALKING ABOUT YOU! :D

Selling The Drama by Live is pretty REM-ish - the vocals are reminiscent of Stipe and the music sounds like it could've come from a 90s REM album. Live were quite outspoken in their appreciation for REM, citing them as influences, and their frontman (I'd spell the name if I could!) even made an appearance on a Monster tour show, so it doesn't come as a surprise.

I haven't heard that many Live songs so I can't properly say if their overall sound resembles REM, but from the comments I've heard there's quite a similarity.

It seems like the 90s REM sound is/was the one that most people tried to copy, being the band one of the main standards of the alt-rock boom, it was a no-brainer for bands to attempt a similar sound - Counting Crows, Live, Toad The Wet Sprocket, etc... REM was big in shaping their sound, even bands that didn't sound quite alike them, like Radiohead, cite their output as influential, all the way 'til Up, which inspired them on making Kid A. I don't know many bands that sound like 80s REM, but that decade's output was just as influential as the latter's, if not more, not only in their sound but in their work ethic, after all ,they are considered one of the grandparents of the whole alternative rock scene.

Anyway, yeah, Selling The Drama by Live.

"The Kids Are On High Street" by Madrugada has some R.E.M. similarities which many critics have noticed (can't say that I fully agree on that one). The Band themselves claims that the song was inspired by The Byrds and not R.E.M. (Yes, I know that R.E.M. is inspired by The Byrds too. Probably why Madrugadas song sound like something R.E.M. would do).

Something about "The Engine Driver" by the Decemberists reminds me of R.E.M.--maybe it's the guitar sound.  Not sure.

You couldn't swing a cat on MTV's 120 Minutes back in the late 80s and early 90s without hitting a band that sounded like 80s era R.E.M. That wasn't always necessarily a bad thing especially when it came to bands like Miracle Legion.

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

"u.s. mustard co." by robert pollard, is an awesome, jangly, r.e.m.-ish tune. double all that for "death of the party" by the keene brothers (robert pollard and tommy keene) and they're both brilliant songs to boot.

here's a legal mp3 of "death of the party" from pollard's official site.

there's this band called human television that makes VERY r.e.m.-ish music, all jangly and murky. seek out this song of theirs called "i forgot."

The album Release by the Pet Shop Boys has some songs on it which sound quite like REM. Johnny Marr plays guitar on it, hence the jangly Buck-like sound.

"The Hardest Part" by Coldplay sounds very REM-like.  It was even stated by the band to be their "REM tribute"  I still say  that the REM sound is their own, and no one can or ever will copy it.  But u can't blame anyone for wanting to try. :)

World Leader Pretend: New Voices. It's very, very Document/Green R.E.M.

I remember being in college in the early 90's, and someone brought in a video of some "new band". Everyone in the class said pretty much simutaneously, "they sound exactly like R.E.M." I forget the name of the band now.

Yes, great, great band, although a couple of their later songs did not sound like R.E.M. Baypath Rd. sounded like a mix between Automatic for the People, Fables of the Reconstruction, and Murmur. Example was a little bit more independent of the R.E.M. influence, although some of the songs, such as "Mighty K.C.," which steals the instrumental segment from "Kill the Birds" from Baypath Rd., and "Orangeworker," which is almost identical to Baypath's "3," still sound exactly like R.E.M....

Um, what else sounds like R.E.M.?

"Superman" by The Clique
"Strange" by Wire, although the Wire version is like 6000X better
"There She Goes Again" by The VU

ok, seriously now

"Out There" by Blake Babies
"Cesspool" by Blake Babies
Most of the other songs by Blake Babies
"Allison Road" by Gin Blossoms
Some early Collective Soul

Oh yeah - Blake Babies is a very good suggestion!

extending the John P Strohm thinking  - how 'bout some songs of the Mendoza Line?

Josh Joplin Group - Camera One

This was a moderate hit some years back, Josh has always sounded a bit like JMS, but this songs especially had a lot of people I know thinking this was a R.E.M. song.

Death Cab for Cutie - Soul Meets Body

I don't know why, when I first heard this song I instantly thought it sounded R.E.M.ish. I found out later that they cite R.E.M. as an influence (especially Peter's guitar style) and that they even covered Driver 8, so maybe I'm not crazy ;)

YES!!!  Josh Joplin Group's "Camera One" ...now how could I leave this one out!  I remember hearing this on the radio at work when it first came out, and actually wondering if it were a new R.E.M. track....way to go, ADRENALINE!!  (or should I say, "take a bow!")  :p
