The most amazing thing about this thread is the amount of people that have vacated the premises. It's like some sort of Murmurs rapture.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

But REM past and present still walk the earth!
So where would the raptured murmursians be? And with who(m)?
Actually, let's not go there.Too scary. They could be in some gawdawful place with the Partridge family as musical dieties. *shudder*

Oh I wasn't suggesting that everyone had 5 kids. I wasn't even suggesting that everybody have even one. It was more my bafflement at  a lot of respondents here to the kids question. So many of them were overwhelmingly negative like "Ewwwww!"  and "Hell no"  and "oh, the horror"and "are you fucking crazy? I'd rather stick pins in my eyes".
Looked like people were equating raising children with some terrible catastrophe. I am bewildered by that.

I pretty much thought that way for a long time. There is a big part of me that still cringes around children. I am about as maternal as a stick. But I'm at least begining to believe that it might not ruin my life, and could even be fun. Problem is, I'm 35, and my husband is moving like molasses toward thinking it could be a good thing. We've always been poor, unsettled (geographically) and a little juvenile, in that we prefer having time to ourselves for...yeah, I know...playing video games, and drinking beer. Honestly, we have a shit-ton of fun, just the two of us. I'm still torn, but I worry that I will miss out on something really swell if I don't have a child before I'm too old. I'm hoping I could still be me, you know, and have me time. That might be a ridiculous dream.

I'm hoping I could still be me, you know, and have me time. That might be a ridiculous dream.
I was never one of those girls who adored little children and wanted to be around them. When I did babysitting as a teen, it was for the money.
I did always know I wanted kids, though. I figured I'd feel differently about my own, and mine wouldn't bore me. That turned out to be the case, thank God.
My first child was not planned. We were newly married and broke and *OOPS*, contraceptive failure. So it was make my mind up fast about what to do because in that situation you kinda have to, and I couldn't end the pregnancy  because we were skint and the future was financially shaky at best. My hubby was ambivalent, and worried because we were broke and living in a tiny 1 bedroom apt, but he respected that I couldn't have an abortion for that reason and live with myself, and we now have a beautiful, successful grown daughter. Well, we have 3 of those, and 1 gorgeous son and an almost 16  horrorshow I have to take prom dress shopping this week. She'll turn out fine. The others did, and 2 of them were nightmare teenagers. Come to think of it, they were not easy as toddlers, either.
So we really had it thrust on us in the beginning. The plan would have been to wait at least a couple of years after the wedding to start a family. Fate often thumbs its nose at plans like that.
Out of 5, the only one we actually planned is our second child. If anyone had told me when I was 18 I'd end up with 5 children, I'd have told them to up their meds. It just happens that me and my DH are great at conceiving kids. If we shared a toothbrush, I'd be knocked up. He finally had a vasectomy after #5.

ETA-- having a baby doesn't turn women into Stepford wives. My personality hasn't changed, other than I've become more responsible. That probably would've happened anyway because yanno, you get older and some say, wiser. But I sit and hoot at South Park  and get giddy spells when I act  like a 6 year old. Things like rolling down hills and making up interpretive dances for my own amusement. Verdict of kids' friends is that I am "quirky".
That's fine. I can live with quirky.

I suppose you're right.

I first saw an edited version where Daniel Tosh said in their part of the country it was called a "fur coat Barbie", but the uncomfortable and somewhat funny part for me was that I could easily see one of my kids doing this. Of course, coming from the plague and hantavirus capital of the world, it would've been out of her hands much faster. I think.

I love Daniel Tosh.

I probably would have done the same thing as a kid; I was enthralled by furry creatures.
