The Tractor Bar is a thread where a close group of people post, which is something else than all those games in ChitChat.

So are the 'Official Rome thread', the 'Plaudereke' and Miki's Great Idea' was just the same, at least when it was moved to Chit-Chat. I've never understood what makes the TB different from other threads, already on CC.

Those who habitually post on TP, are posting chit-chat-like, so I can't get why they don't want to see all CC threads on 'new posts'.. I'm sorry but it sounds a little bit haughty, to me.

Why, reading some posts around, I feel the opposite?

Hey, it wasn't MY insane idea to move those threads to CC... I think those you named don't belong there at all, as people who want to post in one of those need to subscribe to the CC user group and have to accept that the whole CC rubbish will be visible under new posts!

Define CC rubbish, please?

Thanks, Werner, I got my first pager ever! :)

Anyway, my point was that Chit-Chat was created, if I remember well, because some users were tired to see always on top of New Posts, posts of just those threads I named. It wasn't about rubbish=games posts.

....I was just asking, Werner, it's nothing personal!

Either way, I do think it'd be nice to have the "bar" threads as something we could opt out of seeing. There's other threads than TB, as well, I think.  I don't really care whether they get put in chit-chat or not. Besides, what's wrong with chit-chat, when it's a chit-chat type thread?

I'd be fine with the Bar threads being something one has to subscribe to.  I thought that was sort of what was being proposed yesterday; guess I misunderstood.

Personally, I don't even understand why Murmurs needs to be restructured, but since it's going to happen, I'm going to express an opinion.  I see that the Tractor Bar may not seem any more special than any other chatty type thread, and I understand why some people think it belongs in Chit Chat.  To me, though, the TBar has been so long-running that it's more than just chat - it's sort of a history of a segment of Murmurs.  The TBar will be four years old in December.  I think most Chit Chat threads are much shorter lived than that, though I could be wrong, I certainly haven't read them all.

The idea of having more areas which one could subscribe to or opt out of is very good, I believe.  Then those who want to subscribe to the long-running Bars would not have to see all the CC threads, and those who aren't interested in new Bar posts could avoid seeing them.

Just my 2 cents.  Not meaning to sound haughty.

Also worth noting, was that chit-chat was created and stood as a "normal" forum for quite a while, before it was decided that people who didn't want to read it should be able to NOT see it in their "new posts".

I always thought it would be better for those types of forums if they were ALL visible in the basic view (eg, for newbies), and then people who knew the forum, and knew they weren't interested in posting there, could opt out. The way it is, newbies often don't know about Chit-chat, you have to change user setting to even be able to see what it's all about.  I don't know if that's just how the vBulletin hack thingies work, though.

....and yes, there were sone very long conversation chit-chatty type threads in there, right from the beginning. So the Bar threads aren't the only ones with their own longstanding history. Chit-chat was created just for those long threads, way in its beginning, I believe.

Ah, thank you for that.  Yes, I agree, opting out would be better than having to subscribe to something that's invisible.

I think that the way that the future murmurs will be designed there will be no need for much of this discussion anyhow. I think one of the problems with "Chit Chat" Forums, isnt the forums themselves but rather the inordinate number of posts in them on a daily basis. From what I understand the way it could be set up in the future is still to make all these forums visible but not have them show up on the "New Posts" list.

It would not be the same as the current "Group Membership"-Type thing where it is either "Viewable" or "Not-Viewable" but rather everyone will be able to view the conference but they would have the choice of whether or not they would want that conference feeding their new posts or not.

If Lucy read tractor bar she could make it so that the Chit Chat conference did not feed her new posts but at the same time go into that thread and read and post as she saw fit.

Hmmmmm.  It'd be cool if we could have individual, personalized menus of which threads we wanted to show in "New Posts".

It seems there are lots of possibilities and that this can be made to work so that most people are fairly satisfied.

that would be my personal idea as well.
scrap the memberships for forums views, keep them all visible and define the new posts forums in your user cp.

and generally:
and if someone only wants to know the posts of certain threads there has always been a thing called thread subscription. check your thread tools and then all subscribed threads show in the user cp.
you can also subscribe to forums.

i think this feature isnt used very often because it isnt easy to figure out if it makes sense or not, for what purpose it is good and for which it is not. this everyone has to find out for himself i guess.

That does sound a bit complicated, for some of us.  :)

That would be good; I never even knew about the existance of these types of forums until this whole reorganization discussion came up.

The proposed changes look good though, changing what needed to be changed without making it different enough to be confusing.

Excluding forums from New Posts is a hack that I'll be adding on when we upgrade the boards.

The board upgrade will coincide with the redoing of how content works, implementation of a standalone tracker (not VB integrated, to improve security/stats) and the conference reorg. I'm planning all of it out today :)

I see th tracker is going to be stand alone, will there still be a trading subforum, under live on 12 legs? It's pretty much the only forum I frequent, and care about.

Yes, there will still be a trading forum. I'm hacking up the torrent tracker to use our userdatabase (in some fashion) as well as the boards.

Journals: they will be much, much, much better. I don't know about importing old journals over.

It'll be at URL's like http://www.murmurs.com/blog/ethank

Looking good!
I would have merged book/TV/film into just one media forum, but that's nothing life-altering really :)

that'd be neat.

It just occurred to me that by condensing the forums, It will be harder to see whats going on at a glance, and harder to reply to long threads.

Reason: As posts are made, the earlier threads don't take you to the last post. That makes the board less user friendly and cuts interaction????

Maybe the idea of having most of the board within small group membership subscriptions is a good idea, instead of the condensing suggested?
