Contemplation - Bill Nelson

This is a live version from a May 1984 concert. It goes against almost everything I now consider good. There are drum sequences, some wanky guitar lines, vocoder effects, and none of the 'horn' sounds are actually horns. Plus its 12 FREAKING minutes long!!! But I can't stop listening to it.

I was at this show and taped the broadcast off the radio, but then about 15 years ago, the tape broke.  I cried.  Finally found the boot through Nelson's message board.

The released version of the song didn't even come close.
Where a small knife tears out those sloppy seams,
and the silence knows what your silence means,
and your metaphors (as mixed as you can make them)
are linked, like days, together.

Bill Haley & His Comets - Thirteen Women (And Only One Man In Town)

Simply put, this is just a great, great, great song.

Its a perfect mix of early rock & roll, rockabilly, and big band swing.  A great sound that just isn't heard enough these days.

The song tells the sordid, Cold War era tale of a young Bill Haley who wakes up in the aftermath of the H-Bomb only to discover he is the last man alive . . . surrounded by thirteen willing women.   ;)

I highly recommend this one.

If an oldie like this song isn't up your alley, some of you may prefer this.  Or maybe the remix.

After listening to your Bill Nelson track Tualla, (which I like alot.  I like what IIIIIIIIIIIII SEEEEEEE!!!) I think its pretty fair to say our songs couldn't be any more different.  80's drum sequences, vocoder, and 12 minutes long versus 3 minutes of verse/chorus/verse early rock & roll.

That's why these YSI threads can be so awesome.  There's one on another MB that I read that is over 22 pages long.  I've discovered a lot of cool stuff that way, including the Bill Haley track.

I hope others jump on this bandwagon.  Great thread.

Kisses Sammy!

Could you post the Bill Haley song?  'can't say I've ever heard it.

Well all in time I guess. :)

Tualla, I was half way downloading the song you posted and my connection got interurrpted  for some reason. :(  It's a big file.  I have more time tonight so I'll try it again.
I agree this is a great thread. :)
Thanks Sam for the Bill Haley track.  I really enjoy old songs like  it, uncomplicated & yet so great. :)

I chose a song by Dave Graney & The Coral Snakes (An AC/DC Cover)  I love the humour in many of their songs and in particular this cover of Show Business.  The exaggerated vocals, the keyboards and lyrics of a wanna-be creates an atmosphere & mood for the song which is quite hilarious.  http://s35.yousendit...IC1CMQ6KCTXI3Y2

Edit:  I read the liner notes after posting this and discovered it's actually an AC/DC cover! I never would have guessed lol!

I just finished downloading the Bill Nelson song Tualla.  I love the drum sequence, it's driving & definite & doesn't over power the other great sounds you mentioned in the song.   I really liked the guitar solo at the end too!
Thanks. :)

That's really cool Lori!  I love it when covers change the song dramatically - especially with AC/DC; it  just reinforces how good the writing is.

Also gotta say I really like Sammy's choice. I'm ignorant of most oldies rock.

I don't understand how YSI's business model can keep it going. I'm finding that sometimes it works really well and other times it is just terrible - all within the 7 day/20 downloads timeframe.

Tualla, I remember you once posted something about how great a Joe Strummer record you just bought was.  I heard a really great track off one of his last releases on the radio a while ago but I didn't catch the name of the track.  I'd love to know.  I remember it having a lot excellent rhythm sounds.  Do you have any idea of what that track is?  Perhaps can post it here too. :)

Lori  - wonder if it's Coma Girl from Streetcore?

http://s37.yousendit...Y61NZVNPWL2JMPQ

I ;heart; that whole CD and I think that's about the only one that got any airplay.

You heard any of Mark Kozelek's AC/DC covers? Bringing new meaning to the songs cannot even half describe the power and sadness of what Kozelek does.

What's up, cool kids?

Not to toot my own horn, but that Depeche Mode remix I posted is ten kinds of awesome.  I hadn't even listened to it when I posted it, but I played the hell out of it this weekend.

I'm downloading the other tracks as we speak, and will post again this morning.

No it wasn't but that song is really great and I was prompted to go to amazon.com and listen to some snippets.  I ended up ordering two, Streetcore & Global a Go-go because I loved what I heard from the samples.   I think that song I mentioned before might be Bhindi Bhagee or Johnny Appleseed.  I'll go back and listen to snippets from Rock Art and the X-Ray Style later  too.  Thanks heaps. :)

You've got me playing Global-a-go-go.  Love that Cd too!!!

Here is Kozelek's version of Bad Boy Boogie taken from a Jan 2004 concert in San Francisco.  It is a tad dirge like, but listening to it, and then listening to the Bon Scott original, I can hardly recognize the song.

On the day I was born, the rain came down
There was trouble brewing at my home town
It was the seventh day, I felt like Satan's Son
And I scared the ghost out of everyone

They said fast
And I said slow
They said yes
And I said no
They said up
And I said down
Down

Being bad ain't so bad
I've known more pretty women than most men have
So won't you all come along with me
And I'll show you how good bad can be.

http://s59.yousendit...FX0UG9J2GVU5CEL

Think Kozelek has a Modest Mouse covers CD coming out soon. Can't wait.

I've never heard of Mark Kozelek. That's was lovely.  Thanks again Tualla. :) I really liked the quiet acoustic guitar & his vocals in the song.  Made it quite a moving listen.

I like the song Sam but that remix was a little too bombastic for my taste.  I'll take a listen to the other version.  I might like it more. Thanks :)

Damn! Read the thread too late..the file has expired! I know i'll love your track Tualla because it's Bill Nelson. Love his be-Bop Deluxe stuff and Red Noise, but i've never heard much of his solo stuff.
