While working long, boring days this summer getting money together to live through law school I set about the stentorian challenge of compiling a list of my 50 favorite albums. The thing that was the most important was that I was to be completely honest with myself, not throw in Love's Forever Changes just because you should but instead realize that M.Ward's 2003 album actually is one of my favorite albums of all time. Here goes the top 20:

1. "Fables Of The Reconstruction" REM
2. "Beggars Banquet" Rolling Stones
3. "Flying Low" Willard Grant Conspiracy
4. "Desire" Bob Dylan
5. "On The Beach" Neil Young
6. "Transfiguration Of Vincent" M.Ward
7. "The Texas-Jerusalem Crossrods" Lift To Experience
8. "Auomatic For The People" REM
9. "Doolittle" Pixies
10. "High, Low & Inbetween" Townes Van Zandt
11. "New Day Rising" Hüsker Dü
12. "Born To Run" Bruce Springsteen
13. "Green" REM
14. "Live At Folsom Prison" Johnny Cash
15. "Mojave" Willard Grant Conspiracy
16. "Tomorrow The Green Grass" Jayhawks
17. "Satesfied Mind" Walkabouts
18. "Live Dead" Grateful Dead
19. "Reckoning" REM
20. "The Fine Art Of Self Destruction" Jesse Malin

What is it with those four little boys from Liverpool whose talent time never diminishes? The greatest thing since bread came sliced or the best by virtue of being the 'first'. I think at my age I should have bought one of their albums by now but for some reason I have never felt the desire, the connection, even though I do hear songwriting genius in a lot of what I hear from them. It can never be better for me than those early REM albums but someone tell me what the best Beatles album is for me to get first to truly appreciate the widely crowned all-time masters?

I'm not sure where I'd recommend starting since some people seem to favor their early stuff over their later stuff (and vice versa) but my personal favorite is the Hey Jude album (aka The Beatles Again) though it can be rather difficult to find on CD.

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."
