The hunk of man storms in.

"I can't take it anymore.  I've got nowhere to go."

:buck: "Go home then."

"I have two lazy grown kids and 12 grandchildren that swarm like killer bees.  Not only that, but the youngest of the grandchildren won't stop blasting his head off."

:buck: "When was that kid born?"

"Something like April 5, 2002."

:buck: "A kid born on that day can't be all bad."

"They also brought a puppy with them that won't stop yipping."

:buck: "So how long are you staying here?"

"Until most of those kids go home, and the ones who don't go to bed."

:mike: "Could you by chance be married to one of the Blahniks?"

"Yeah.  But I tell you that when she works herself to death, I'm living alone, and if someone does live with me they're going to have to clean up after themselves."

:mike: "Are your kids really that messy?"

"My daughter hasn't done dishes in two months."

:buck: "I guess that answers that one."

there are conifers that belong in europe. not oregon pines, tho. mind you - weren't we talking about cedars? i'm homesick for our forest in beverstedt now. it's got beeches and oaks the way a german forest should have and the forester once told me it's one of like three forests in the region still left in this state. it's beautiful in spring when the beeches spout their new leaves, all light green. and it's got a traditional farmhouse complex with freerange chicken, a baking house and lots of plum trees, a playground and neolithic tombs. i love my forest! anyone else got a lovely forest at home? hey, peter, didn't you do stuff in forest conservation? what was that all about?

:buck: huh? yeah, i did. gotta think about it, tho, it's been a couple of years since, y'know...

*kicks werner's machine* better? sometimes they want it the hard way... anyway... it's difficult about the european forests i agree (even tho i'm bloody fuckin sure that a reasonably well maintained oak-beech forest is as close as we're ever gonna get to nature). a lot of the problem, however, doesn't seem to lie in the distribution of plants but in that of animals. an eco-system with large predators like the mountaineous european forests used to be will of course deal with difficulties in a totally different way from that of today. and introducing species likes the canadian bobcat into euroepan forests doesn't help much easier. alright, there's the bobcat back. but as north american predators are of course dependent on different kinds of prey from european ones it doesn't really help clear up the mess in the long run. regardlessof all that i love my wachholzer wald!

umm.. peter?

:buck: huh?

are you pondering that forest thing or are you just drunk?

:buck: ummm... pondering. hard to remember y'know...

*shakes head* you're drunk my good man, no more alcohol for you. lucky you, i've found some stuff on your and your wife's activities anyway. no relying on SOME people...

one should think you'd keep these things in mind, buck!

:buck: riiiiiiiight... *slides off chair*

btw - i'm talking about beeches, not birches. birches are betula. buchen, nicht birken. boken in low german, it's probably something very similar in dutch.

and to where would you resettle these villages? that might work in countries with a low population density, but neither your nor my country is one of those. not to mention that by resettling villages you'd have to seal more ground to create infrastructure, use energy to demolish houses and move people, create lots and lots of waste in demolishing the old settlements and so on. i'd rather see an ecologically well-managed village in the middle of the forest than that...

how are ye under the table there at all, peter?

:buck: just fine, could ya fix me a bacon sandwich?

The hunk of man walks in.

"At least you don't have George W. Bush in charge of your countries' environmental policies."

:buck: "I usually don't have sympathy for anyone.  But considering that your mom died last week and you're married to a Blahnik, I'll make an exception."

"I wonder if there'll be any campgrounds left when I retire."

:buck:"Nope.  They'll probably be stip malls or parking lots or BA terminals."

"Maybe I should retire now."

how did the hunk of man recover so magically from lying under the table pissed drunk and munching on bacon sandwiches, the landlady wonders but lets it pass.

werner - maximalforderungen stellen, huh?! i guess you have a point there, but on the other hand maximum demands have the unfortunate tendency of scaring people off. i'm more with willy brandt on the whole issue of realising your political visions... small steps will bring you there, too, y'know...

oi, peter!

:buck: huh?

how do you suddenly manage to stand up without help with all the merlot in you?

:buck: *extracts small packet of little tablets from his pocket with a smirk* they always do it for me...

*wary look at tablets* oh my god...

:buck: *starts foaming at the mouth* oh my god? what? are you trying to... *starts blathering and attacking random targets* i'll kill you! i'll kill you all!

You people seem to know as much about trees as my dad, and he got the highest grade in the wood science college in a year, and there only one in the country. And hes worked in the trade for 25 years and is setting up his own timber business now.

How do you people know so much...

He's setting up a business selling a new product that was recently invented in China called Engineered Vennered Lumber, or EVL. They get one of the native light colored woods, mush it up, and put it back together, with a few advanced technology things and make it look like any other wood. The thing aobut it is you can make it as wide as you want, and you can make it so you can't get any ugly knots in it, and it will always look like real wood. I think some Europeans have developed a similar one called Alpi as well. The chinese company that makes it is very enviromentally frendly and always is very productive in forest management (I.E. replanting trees when they cut them down).

The exact methods are Vicwoods secret. They won't even let there regional directors in.

asian logging companies in general cause no end of trouble to american forests. the japanese are particularly cynical about it. in the pacific northwest they engage in so called scenic forestry - the chop down the entire forest and leave two or three rows of trees close to the walkways so it looks like forest for the hikers. in western canada they practice an even more cynical version of that. when they cut down a forest they'll leave the occasional perfectly grown pine standing with a nice plaque attached to it as a gift for the local first nations people to carve totempoles out of. it's a fuckin disgrace, and, needless to be said, the first nations reps in british columbia are less than happy about it. and now i'm just about to start on japanese fishing practices in the north eastern pacific. maybe i should shut up now before i start getting REALLY pissed off...

Patron:  Peter, maybe you should go home. When you start making racial slurs, you can't be in your right mind.  Remember the kill the president speech?"

:buck: "You saying I can't hold my liquor?"

Patron:"I just don't want you to say or do something you'll regret in the morning."

Patron: "I'm not wearing a tie."

I know Peter's not racist, but he has a tendency to do really, really stupid things when he's had too much to drink.  Do you think he really wanted to kill the president either?  Do you think he wanted to disrupt that BA flight? I guess I'm not sure what will come out of Peter's mouth when he's stranded in Blottoville.

btw I can't afford a car, and I've never been to Seaworld.  Also my parent's cars are around ten years old.  Some Americans don't have the money to be buying a new car every year.
