I love a good indie/art film as much as the next person but this one sucked left hind tit, especially if you like movies that have an actual ending.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I went to see Warrior last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It doesn't seem to be getting a lot of press but it is a terrific film starring Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte and Joel Edgerton (Uncle Owen from Star Wars). I guess the easiest comparison to make is that of The Fighter. I'm not sure it is quite as good as that film but it is still one of the best this year.

The performances are all excellent. Nolte stands out a little more but I think that is just because he had the more showy scenes. I'd say he will get an Oscar nomination in 2012 for this. The fight scenes in this are some of the best I've seen in a sports movie. I don't know anything about MMA myself but to me it looked real. And ferocious. Tom Hardy is simply an animal in the ring. It bodes well for his role as Bane next year.

Anyone else seen this?

Based on reactions I've read elsewhere about this movie, I was halfway expecting not to like it. Thankfully, that didn't turn out to be the case. Perhaps those that were disappointed in it were expecting something far different from the end result, like a thriller or something.

I enjoyed this but had no idea there were two feature length movies on the DVD. That caught me completely off guard. Evidently, Broken Trail originally aired as a two-parter on AMC as part of their original programming.

Horrible Bosses was much funnier than I was expecting especially given it's dark tone. Bad Teacher? Not so much...

It would be nice to see R.E.M. get the documentary treatment at some point. That would be much more to my liking than some movie where they're portrayed by actors.

How was that? Didn't know Richard Ayoade directed movies; I only know him from Garth Marenghi's Dark Place and The Mighty Boosh.

Posted Image

Nice, but slow. I like the George Clooney version a little better.

Posted Image

Totally not what I thought it was going to be, but still had some creepy images. Kind of out there, and sort of a Poltergeist rip-off. There's even a scene of an investigator holding a steak to his eye--direct steal!

Posted Image

Also this one sort of scared the crap out of me. Could be because I was drinking wine?

I'm no expert on his background but I think that may be his first movie. I enjoyed Submarine myself. I get tired of indie fare sometimes, especially when it tries too hard to be different but I really liked this one.

"Mumblecore"? Never heard of it until this movie...

Yeah, I can't believe I've never seen this either. Not sure why it took me so long to get around to it other than I kinda knew how it ended although no one ever told me. Those final scenes are extremely difficult to watch but that's part of the whole story. There's a lot of shit movies out there but this isn't one of them.

Not really sure what I was thinking when I rented this one. It has a few laughs but not enough to redeem the movie.

I was hesitant to rent this because of all the bad reviews I'd read of it last summer. I enjoyed it a great deal so I have no idea what they were talking about.

I caught some discussion about this on another board back in the summer when it first came out, otherwise it probably would have passed me by completely. If it played in my area upon it's release, I wasn't aware of it at the time. That talk I read about it on that board was just intriguing enough for me to give it a shot and I'm glad I did. However, this seems to be one of those movies that is of the "you either love it or you hate it" variety. Taking a look at some of the reviews for it on Amazon, most people either seem to give it five stars or one star with very little middle ground. Even though I felt it had some shortcomings, I'd firmly place myself in the love it category. It's slow moving, it's long (139 minutes), there's very little dialogue and it has no real discernable plot so if those things turn you off it's pretty safe to say The Tree of Life is not for you. Personally, I found the cinematography to be breathtaking and the movie itself to be thought provoking. It is so open ended that I think everyone can walk away from the film with their own ideas as to what it's about. If you're into that sort of thing then I'd say it's definitely worth seeing. If any of what I've had to say about it piques your interest in the least I suggest taking a gander at the trailer for it.

This one was implausible at times, but overall, I thought it was pretty decent. I find myself liking DiCaprio as an actor the older he gets.

Very low budget and only somewhat enjoyable. The best part about it was Tom Waits' extended cameo appearance.

I enjoyed it too even though the ending was different from the book's finale (the latter was better I thought).

This was a total surprise. This indie "film noir" is very well crafted. Cool storyline and great twist.
