We've heard these versions before - All 3 are from 'Tourfilm', which was all filmed in Greensboro. I Remember California was previously released on the Shiny Happy People Limited Edition CD.
Yes, we have but they all sound very fresh to my ears. Probably because I haven't watched
Tourfilm (aside from a clip here and there on YouTube) in ages. I'd also say the sound quality is vastly improved, though those with more audiophile tendencies have said it's very compressed. I listened to the EP last weekend at the beach with the volume cranked up and the windows down but I can't say I really noticed anything. Then again, I'm no audiophile so I probably wouldn't anyway.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."
