AUGUSTA, Ga. — Mike Mills rose from a chair and strolled out to his car, but not to fetch a musical instrument to perform songs from the catalog of R.E.M., his seminal alternative-rock band.
A fantasy draft of Masters golfers, involving Mills and a dozen others at a house not far from Augusta National Golf Club, had just concluded. And with baseball games in the East winding down, Mills was retrieving a laptop to take stock of his fantasy teams. All six of them. If Grammys were handed out for best, most passionate fantasy sports player in pop music, Mills, 54, would own the category. He juggles multiple teams of N.F.L. players, dabbles in the N.B.A. and is the commissioner of a 20-member golf collective that competes through the PGA Tour season. Hockey would be in the mix, but a league he once won enlisted too few renewals to continue.
“There is nobody I know who is into it like I am,” Mills said, sounding neither proud nor ashamed......

According to a recent press article, Mr. Mills took part in yet another golf tournament whose goal was to raise funds for an educational program. (Another musician reportedly at the competition was saxophonist Branford Marsalis).

"(MIke) Mills even played a little bass guitar with a local band at one of the dinners at Forsyth on Sunday night", writes John Dell of the Winston-Salem Journal.

“They put on a first-class event here, so it’s been great,” Mills is quoted as saying.

The R.E.M. Timeline on their Facebook page had more details about Mike Mills involvement in this tournament a couple of days ago:

On 9 June, Mike was involved in the Celebrity Pro-Am at the Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem, NC, which as part of the 'Pairings Party in the Ballroom' celebrations, he joined local band Below The Line on 'Drift Away', a song R.E.M. played on the Monster Tour.

Below The Line are a young band from Winston-Salem, so having Mike Mills joining them would have made their day no sweat.
