"Happy birthday to Yoko – Michael Stipe, Peaches and Rufus Wainwright sing for star’s 80th bash"

"Pop culture grande dame Yoko Ono’s 80th birthday party was never going to be a retiring affair – after all, she’s the out-there icon that the likes of Lady Gaga still take experimental notes from. Yoko hit the stage to celebrate yesterday (a day early), with a packed-out, typically spirited concert at Berlin’s Volksbühne venue".

"The birthday lady wore stylish black, and was joined by a star-studded array of party guests, including her son and multi-instrumental collaborator Sean Ono Lennon, who led the Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band. Further musical turns came from REM frontman Michael Stipe, sibling duo Rufus and Martha Wainwright (who serenaded Yoko with ‘happy birthday’ in both English and German), and Berlin-based electro provocateur Peaches".

"The set-list spanned several decades of Yoko’s music, including ultra-funky classic Walking On Thin Ice, the psychedelic Mindtrain, and a climactic rendition of her anthem with late husband John Lennon, Give Peace A Chance. Not that this octogenarian vocalist/visual artist/activist/poetic tweeter (@yokoono) is showing any signs of winding down this year – Yoko’s retrospective exhibition Half-A-Wind Show has just opened at Frankfurt’s Schirn Kuntshalle (it will tour Europe over the next year), and she has been announced as curator of the always thrilling Meltdown Festival at London’s Southbank Centre this June. Yoko a-go-go indeed".

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Looks like it was a lot of fun and what a great song to sing along to.

Always nice to see Michael on stage, although I could hardly hear his voice. Great to see that he has been in Berlin again.

Hopefully this is a sign of recovery from his (kind of) stage fright and he'll be back on stage in the near future where he belongs with Mike and Peter :D

This is a report from the German television, from around the same time as the Yoko Ono party (February 19) but he's still bearded!  http://www.zdf.de/ZD.../video/1845828/

Thanks for that link!  Michael's great sense of humour!

(I assume he was speaking about Tom Gilroy)

JMS - "...That's why he's my best friend"
Interviewer - " You've been friends for a long time, what is the biggest thing that you have in common?"
JMS -   "....We can't say it on national television.."
