Beastie Boys Co-Founder Adam Yauch Dead at 48

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

We've lost one of our greats. A true gentleman with the strongest resolve, humor, and energy to spin the world on its axis...and that is exactly what he did. Let's not forget he did it with panache and style and beats and in various costumes. Even while dressed as a Swiss mountain climber. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Beasties and to Adam's family and fans. Michael Stipe and REM

Very sad news.  He was actually only 47 he didn't even make it to 48.  I hate cancer so much it's taking everyone.  And no matter what tips you try to do to prevent getting it, it seems like it's a lost cause.
Adam was a really good guy and one of the original rappers.  I don't care for rap but I don't mind Beastie Boys.

And with that mention from HQ I think it's nothing but appropriate to post this brilliant clip of the (now, sadly, late) Adam Yauch, aka Nathaniel Hornblower, upstaging JMS at the 1994 VMA's...

No tickling the lead singer when he is reaching for a note that he can no longer hit, OK?" JMS, post-audience visit during The One I Love in Bergen, 2008

There's also this clip from Nickelodeon's Livewire where it's supposedly Adam asking about lyrics at around 6:30 into the segment.

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. if memory serves right i think she worked on the video as well, but it's been so long.

it's amazing to see sabotage didn't win a single award that night, it's prolly one of the best video clips of all time.

That was the best thing ever. "Since I was a young boy..."
Michael clearly has a sense of humor. He laughed at this.
As should we all. Award shows are a farce.

That was funny.  Michael was laughing trying to figure out who it was.  " I think that was Cindy Lauper"   I wonder if Adam surprised Michael backstage and revealed who he was or if he kept him hanging for a few days.
