I'm not sure why this is news especially considering that it's common knowledge that Cobain was working on a solo record at the time of his death. I know Stipe has said his participation was more of a way of engaging Cobain to deter him from taking his own life and that nothing actually got recorded. That said, in the all R.E.M. issue of Uncut Stipe said there was some stuff that Cobain was working on himself that has never seen the light of day. To read the article, click here.

"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

link doesnt work
yeah i'd read about this online it seems really interesting! although im very skeptical there's a full albums worth to be released, maybe if they did a chronological think, like cobain solo recordings 90-94. that would be cool.
quality wise, i'd imagine it'd be like all the other solo songs we've heard from him such as do re me (amazing song)
he definitely hadn't gone into a studio, or even had a studio setup at home but still some boombox recordings would be amazing to hear!
