I guess there are some people are still actually trading, but I think the most of us, inlcuidng myself, have realized that the days of hoarding are gone and it's much more fun to share and care. Why not do something for the community and put those tapes online as flac torrents? You may not get rare stuff directly in return, but you will show a good example to others who may later put their rarities (which you may not currently have) online too. As a bonus we all share amazing music with others (non-traders) who otherwise would not have gotten access to it.

I have quite a few shows, many are not listed on my site -- https://sites.google...site/countfeed/ -- because they were posted to DIME. Maybe this summer I will make a better list. If you are interested in any of these, I would be willing to do a trade.
Visit my live show trading page at https://sites.google...site/countfeed/.
Shows I have seen: 1995: 6/2 - Chicago; 1999: 8/20 - Tinley Park; 2004: 10/1 - Philadelphia, 10/30 - Atlantic City, 11/ 4 - New York City; 2005: 7/8 - Ipswich, 7/10 - Cardiff; 2008: 6/6 - Chicago, 6/11 - D.C., 6/14 - Jones Beach, 6/18 - Philadelphia, 6/19 - New York City, 6/21 - Atlanta.
2005 photos, 2008 photos, R.E.M. and Beyond.

You are right to a certain extent. Dime is a good place to give and get shows but STILL there will be hoarders. If i just give everything up how do I shake the trees of the hoarders to get the really rare stuff? The 3 shows i am offering are by no means all I have. In fact I have been trading REM for 23 years and have many very uncirculated shows that places like DIME and peer sharing has made extinct. You may be confused by the term "extinct" so let me explain: Here is the example: I recorded the Austin 1989 show and remember trading it to 2 or 3 people right afterwards. The 3 people got burnout and never traded it. I got REM burnout in the early 90's and threw it in a box. Since noone "treed" it out or widely circulated it it stayed rare. Then people on dime get their Miami/Orlando 1989, Italy 1989, and a couple of the Cali '89 shows for free and they are happy and do not search for more Green shows.

The real problem with this "easy technology" is that people are not taping as much and rely on others to do the dirty work OR record a show with their I-phone and they are happy. How is it that at a recent Cure show with 3,000 attendees there is NO high quality recording - lots of U-tube videos but no quality tapes. If you go back to a 1985 Smiths show in the same theater and there are 3 perfect D6 recordings.

In short, I think the computer age, technology, and rapid "peer sharing" has put a damper on the number of recordings. Take me back to the 80's when the D3, D6, and D5 were the weapon of choice and the term "rare swop" was used widely.

Well, that's just a question of the chicken or the egg, so not really a valid point I think... If you hoard, others will surely hoard. If you stop hoarding, others MAY too.

I disagree. The 2008 tour should show that there certainly was not lack of recordings for the most part. And for R.E.M. this is (sadly) not an issue anymore... What's the connection with the hoparding of shows, BTW?

I do agree however that it's unfortunate if we only get a few brief youtube clips instead of a full recording. That's however only relevant for bands you really collect, i.e. in my case it would only be an issue with R.E.M.

I think there's some inidication here (and that's not unexpected) that the hoarding is a sign of nostalgia. "Having rare shows used to be valuable, now it's not so I'm gonna hoard to see if that re-creates some of that value."

Ok I think with REM traders it may be different. Here is an example of how "hoarding" helps everyone but with a different band.

About 16 years ago I recorded Pearl Jam in Hartford through an ALD (Assistive Listening Device). I could have "tape treed" it out so everyone could have and enjoy it but YES I HOARDED it for 15 years! Someone close to the band came into my trading circle and said "I will only trade band soundboards for other boards" He did not have Hartford so we arranged a trade and now I was able to trade out and circulate 2 boards instead of one.

In my opinion there has to be some stuff held back to ferret out the rarities. I know others may disagree but the mainstream traders should thank the people who strap on gear, spend money on tickets and travel, and beat the bushed for rarities. I welcome all comments.

I think your arguments worked a number of years ago. Less so today. Look at the super rare R.E.M. stuff that has appeared over the last few years - how much circulation would that have gotten if the people behind it chose to only do 1-1 trades for it, for rare stuff they didn't have? Now they put it up for free download, in some cases not even through torrents. Many more people are certainly enjoying that stuff now, than otherwise would have been the case.

Your PJ example also only works under the premonition that others hoard as well. I don't see how those two shows would have gotten less distribution if both of you had put them up as torrents.

I don't argue with anyone chosing to do just trades, it's their choice. I just feel that there are no valid arguments as to why this would be "better" for anyone other than the "hoarding collector" in question.

I agree David,

I have a lot of unreleased R.E.M. soundboard shows & demos that haven't seen the light of day, and was responsible for sharing the Cassette Set last year and was accused of hoarding as well by other fans.

I have always made it clear that until I had the right technology to put out these treasures I wouldn't do so as i wanted to make sure they were put out in their best light, and now that we have that technology - more amazing R.E.M. releases will be coming out.

You know me, I have just returned from Athens,  with an amazing trove of REM soundboard shows from the masters, which we will release over time via a blog connected to the REM Timeline.  We have decided not to do it via DIME as we want to discuss each show or demos.

Watch this space as it is a very exciting time for R.E.M. fans to come

Regarding the timeline of this project, we hope to start this year, we have about 30 different releases from 1981 onwards, with soundboard shows from virtually every era, alongside demos including unreleased songs as well.

We will be developing the website first to get in preparation. I am extremely busy with various REM projects including scanning all the fan club mail outs (we have every one from the inception of the fan club in 1984 until its closure)

We want everyone to share in these and you will be able to 'read' each one like a book via issuu.

The other project I am involved in is REMcycle. This is remastering all the singles & fan club singles with the same guys that did the New Order & The Smiths releases, which will be starting soon as well.

I do agree we do need to hold stuff back in trade for other rare stuff, & I have rem rarities that the band has asked not to be shared, which unfortunately I have to comply with.

I've been taping REM shows in small venues and sharing them here for years. At first, I had no idea how to do it, but I asked, bought a decent recorder and learnt how to tape, edit and share the recordings. Some of this shows were only taped by me so I'm very happy to give the community a small part of all I get in return. I shared, not only shows but rare TV footage, local press and started snail mail trees for all of those haven't a decent Internet connection.

If you are looking for a concrete show, you are welcome to ask.  some 'lists are too huge to post it :P
