Hi quietgirl,
I think because of "rolling news" the World moves on from events so quickly that tragedies are forgotten. Only the immediate is reported.

I read recently that Japan is now going Nuclear Free, they are now the only major power in the world without nuclear power. For an earthquake and tsunami prone nation, maybe the easiest way to be safe about it.
