REMHQ has posted a brief piece by Bertis celebrating the 32nd anniversary of the band with links to several articles about them that were posted upon the news of their disbandment back in September of last year.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

My favorite DJ on the station I listen to earlier did a vinyl cut of Radio Free Europe in Honor of when they played their first show 32 years ago.  I sure wish it was 2002 and I was saying it was their 22nd anniversary.

Not wanting to sound like party pooper but didn't REM turn 31 and then disband, so isn't that the point when we stop claiming what age they are turning?

I hate to be a party pooper too, but R.E.M. has not turned 32. The band no longer exists.

That's like saying the Beatles still exist.  They split up in 1970.  They turned 10 and then ended.  You can't count every year after 1970 as the band being one year older.  The point is being that a band is no longer a band once they decide to end the band.  You can however count every year as an anniversary of their formation.

Sorry to be knit picky!

I agree Bertis' headline is a bit euphemistic. :(

I edited the headline to reflect Bertis' submission at HQ.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. Happy REM Day to all.  I will never forget this band.  Happy for all of the music they've offered me.

Still want the Box Set though!

Thanks, so my upper post does not count anymore. This one's making me not that "sad" now, so: HAPPY REM-DAY (the sad one will follow in Sept,, right?)!!!

And Happy Easter! (Will go on reading through that Uncut magazine and listen to the records again...) :-)

e-botti you are so right. Yes we are all very sad that they disbanded, it will forever be an ache inside.

We have their glorious legacy to listen to forever though! I have Green playing on my ipod dock right now.

But please lets not fall out. They were the best, so lets keep this date as the one we will never forget, a historic date which we mark for the band who have touched our lives for the better, are in our hearts, will always be a part of our lives.

Thank you Michael, Peter, Mike, Bill and Bertis.

AsktheSky you are right.

All the members of R.E.M. are alive unlike the Beatles.  The Beatles music has lived on and will probably live on forever.

R.E.M. still exists.  The music is still there and will always be there.  I know what they said about re-uniting, blah blah blah.

They said a lot in the old days about how they wouldn't do greatest hits albums, live albums, big charity concerts.  Well they did.
That's where the part lies comes in.  Or maybe it was simply giving in, or priortities changed.

I haven't forgot what Eddie Vedder said, "They hung it up for awhile".  Maybe he's just one of us fans that dream too much.
