Peter and Mike joined Alejandro Escovedo for a few songs at the Continental Club in Austin tonight. Mike sang "Love is All Around" with Peter and Lenny Kaye on guitar and then "Rockville" with Peter. Great to see them together again.

Very cool! There must be pictures somewhere.

Glad to hear Mike has not forgotten about Love is All Around. Now for him to do it with The Baseball Project in Hoboken in a few weeks....

More on Sunday night's show from REMHQ.com. I tried posting the photo they have up at HQ as well as a link to the article HQ mentions at Spinner but every time I try to post the photo and link disappear.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Is that a spray tan, Mr Buck, or are you just spending too much time in Mexico these days?

I have to look up this Alejandro dude though.

I'm surprised more people here aren't familiar with Alejandro. I'm not sure of his exact ties to R.E.M. but considering he was a member of both Rank n' File and the True Believers in the 80s I would imagine he crossed paths with them back in those days quite a bit. Those two bands only scratch the surface of his varied history though. Back in 1998 he was named Artist of the Decade by No Depression magazine.

When introducing Mills and Buck, Escovedo told a great story (that I probably won't get entirely right) about touring through the southeast back in the 80s. On one trip the True Believers played Atlanta and then thought they had a gig in North Carolina, but the gig actually wasn't for another month. They came back to Athens where REM and other bands held a benefit concert (that consisted mainly of Velvet Underground covers) to help them get back to Austin.
