Apparently, the original version was a completely different song, 5 minutes long and featuring synths.
I, for one, would love to see it released. It could highlight the transition from the ATS era to the Accelerate era

Really? Fair enough then! Just remember Ethan saying the original was not great at all. They did improve upon the version on the 2005 tour for Accelerate, at least.

so Iv'e been to the Venus 3 show the other day...
Peter signed my 'hindu love gods' CD and took a picture with me (Bill R. was kind enough to be the photographer!) .
Peter wasn't in a chatty mood but he did say this regarding the boxset-
I don't think there's gonna be a boxset, I guess eventually everything will be online...
and this regarding his solo LP-
we're recording stuff, I don't know if we can call it 'a solo album' yet...

Personally, I'd be delighted to have a well-designed physical release in the form of the "fabled" box-set, but if they just post all the stuff in the vaults on-line (a la the Cowboy Junkies), I could live with that.  Not the same sense of "event" to it, but its the music that matters.  I still wouldn't count the boxset out, though.  It seems like too good an opportunity to pass on.

I would prefer an actual box set myself. Downloading stuff from HQ (or however they would choose to do it) just wouldn't be the same and doesn't hold anywhere near the level of excitement I would have for an actual box set. If they never release one then R.E.M. truly have gone out with a whimper rather than a bang which is unfortunate.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."
