Good luck for Peter. it's good that he is doing his solo album so soon.
I don't mind if the album is vinyl only. That might work for niche markets and Peter. I can't guarantee that the Peter's solo album is one of the 1-2 vinyl albums I will buy during the year though. If it appears in digital format or Spotify then I'm happy.
Is it really important what sells in real record stores or gas stations? Amazon is the biggest record store for physical CD's and vinyl in Europe and US. "Real" record stores can only stock couple of bestsellers that will sell for sure.

I'm interested in this , I wonder if Buck will sing, in all the videos that I've seen of REM, Buck never seemed to open his mouth, did anyone esle note that? Is it that Buck can't sing or chooses not to?
I will always REM(ember) REM's music!

This is a status update from The Baseball Project page on FB. I can only guess they're alluding to the Peter Buck solo album.
Quote
Hard at work the last three days with BBP bassists extraordinaire Peter Buck and Mike Mills, making a Peter-led record in the BBP home haven of Type Foundry Studio in Portland with our main man Adam Selzer at the board. No baseball songs but with Lenny Kaye and Bill Rieflin in the band, and lots of friends dropping by, it is just the right kind of mayhem.
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

I don't really have an opinion about this--he's jost been on SO many albums, it's hard to really be excited about.

I'm definitely excited about a Peter Buck solo record that has Mike on it as well.

Peter is finished his record, recording to mixing took a whole five days. Everything was pretty much a one take deal. Peter sings lead on a bunch,Scott sings lead on a few. Lenny flew in to do some lead guitar.Mike's on it,no Stipe. I've not heard it personally but a friend who has said it's pretty fuckin wild and unlike what you'd expect from Buck. Figure it'll be out in fall or start of 2013.

Yeah, he is on a lot of records but this sounds like he's going out on a limb and out of his comfort zone by also tackling vocals. Not sure how well he sings but it's the left turn this record holds that makes it worth getting excited about.

I can't imagine Peter writing lyrics or singing a full song. I guess there is a first for everything.

I cant wait, I just hope its true.
We should know to expect the unexpected with Peter. He has done some pretty weird things outside of the band. Weird as in funny or outrageous. So if he is going to sing, his approach would be ...well may as well sing the whole fucking lot.
It will be brilliant, Im sure.

You do wonder whether Peter and Mike would be tempted to get a new vocalist and make a record together?
As somebody mentioned I think it is further evidence that Michael was behind the split.

I'm definitely getting more and more curious about this one. I just hope Peter makes it accessible beyond vinyl or it may be a while before I get to hear it. The comments so far, both good and bad, are really intriguing. After the really ""out there and "fucking wild" descriptions, I'll be disappointed if it doesn't live up to it's billing as a complete departure for Peter. Don't know if I'll like it but, it'll be cool if Peter does something really unexpected.

I am so glad I have a turn-table. Peter singing. I can't fully wrap my head around it yet. Yeah sure he's sang with Michael a few times when drunk on stage but you never really heard his voice. He said his voice was Mediocre. I think his ex- R.E.M. band members tried to get him to sing on past albums. I am thinking Peter just might have a good voice but was always too self conscious about it.
