Uncut magazine has a special edition called “Ultimate Music Guide”.
This time they are dedicating 148 pages to R.E.M.

I wonder if this will be available in the US. $9 for shipping is a bit pricey. Years ago, 2001 I think, the Q special edition was available at bookstores. Anyone know from past experience if the special editions are sold in the states?

Since the band no longer exists and they're looking at their whole career - why a photo of just the 3 of them and not one with Bill?  Yes it was just the 3 when they split but the classic line up would be the 4 of them?

Got to agree on that Haggis.

Looking forward to reading it though. Thanks for posting Luc.

mmmh probably because some month ago they already did a special edition about R.E.M. and they used a picture with all of them

Wasn't that New Musical Express rather than Uncut or are they one and the same?
"We were listening to the UNC radio (station) there and they were playing an R.E.M. song. I like R.E.M. fine, but at the end of it, the DJ says, 'Ya that was R.E.M., the sound of the new South'. I looked at my roommate and we said, Gawd, if that's the sound of the new South, I preferred it when it was on the skids. That's how we got the name."

Thanks. I ordered this.
I do feel the need to revel in how great R.E.M. are.

Yikes! These look cool, but yeah: NME and Uncut seem to be from the same publication, so which one is the one to buy? Of course I like the Bill Berry included cover the best. Anybody have the option to flip through both? is Uncut the North American version of NME? And why the two covers...

Completely different things, from what I understand. They're only published by the same publishing house, I guess. NME was essentially just a special cover on their regular weekly edition, whereas the uncut thing seems like a full R.E.M. only magazine.

It's kind of hard to tell from the description on the website but since the New Musical Express issue appears to be a limited edition, I get the impression that it may also be devoted entirely to R.E.M. I would like a copy of both but shipping costs are more than a bit steep. So far, I haven't seen the Uncut edition on U.S. newsstands but that doesn't mean it isn't available here.

It is not. As mentioned above, it's "essentially just a special cover on their regular weekly edition". Includes an R.E.M. article but that's it.

I'm not sure what the story is with the NME cover, but the uncut magazine is definately all about REM, mine arrived yeaterday. Looks like it will be a good read!

That said they have rated all the songs on every album and they are pretty shocking to be honest!

2 stars for New test leper, 2 for Undertow, 3 for Find the river and several others, yet songs like mine smells like honey get 4!

deservedly so, in my humble opinion; sure, 2 stars for new test leper and find the river is quite an odd rating

I guess this is on a scale where two stars are the best, and maybe six the worst?

Thanks for the clarification, Sweden. As for the song ratings, um, this is starting to seem more like opinion masked as journalism. I was actually excited about this issue and was hoping it was along the lines of the Q edition a while back (which was pretty cool) but it seems like nothing more than a hastily written "book" to cash in on the band's split. Rating every song is so scraping the bottom of the barrel of the middle distance. HA!

Of course this is an instance where "I want[ed] to be wrong." Double-HA! So tell me if I am...in a nice way preferrably...

Uncut I swear every single time they have had R.E.M. on the cover since 1998 is always a picture from that same photo shoot.  As if they never did another photo shoot.  I agree they should have used an older picture with Bill included on that cover.
I hope I can find it at the bookstore on Sunday.  Be nice not to pay that big shipping fee.
